In West Hollywood, Pope Francis' Stand On Gays Is Unimpressive March 14, 2013
For Giancarlo Urey, a 29-year-old lawyer who spent the day in West Hollywood when Pope Francis was named to the papacy, the new leader's anti-gay stance is not a good sign.
Like his predecessor in the Vatican, Francis is equally committed to conservative, traditional doctrine, people who know him say, a sensibility fostered in part by his theological studies in Germany.
He was a staunch opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage, issues that an increasingly secular Argentina has embraced. He once said allowing gay couples to adopt constituted discrimination of the children.
"I think it's just another reminder that the Catholic Church doesn't progress with the times," said Urey, who is gay.
Urey, who was raised Baptist and lives downtown, said he doesn't expect the sentiment to change anytime soon.
"I'm not hopeful that as an institution it will turn around," he said. "But I hope individuals will open their eyes. There's always hope."
Urey, who has Bolivian and Guatemalan roots, said he doesn't think the selection of an Argentine pope is too surprising considering the prevalence of Catholicism in Spanish-speaking countries.
And in many ways, he said, an Argentine pope isn't that much of a change.
"I'm not impressed, I'm not excited," said Urey, who called Argentina "about as European as you can get."
Before he was pope, as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis reportedly described gay marriage as the work of the devil and a destructive attack on Gods plan. He has also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.

He’s right on all counts.
“Pope Francis’ Stand On Gays”
Would love to hear a gay say that ten times.
If Rob Portmans son loves two men will Portman come out in support of polygamy?
Despite his perverted hobbies, this Urey character is right. Truth doesn't 'progress with the times', neither does the Church. Falsehood, OTOH, which is Uery's stock in trade, constantly tries to reinvent itself.
That is an interesting question.
I wonder what Mr. Portman would say if his son was fond of children.
Who should we believe?
The Lord, the Pope, and the father of Poland’s freedom
or...
President Nothing, Barney Frank, and the pedophile-enabling house speaker of Colorado?
Not that I disagree with any of this..there is something I really don’t understand.
If I were to go to a church that preached something that I totally disagree with..I’d just go else where.
No media, no criticism, nothing.
It seems like an easy enough solution.
The Church doctrine is just that—it’s been there for 2000 years and isn’t going to change. And yet, these critics should know that this is the man who washed the feet of gay men dying from AIDS. He’s not a bigot—he upholds the principles of his Church.
I think he will be an excellent Pope. Excellent doesn’t even describe it. Actually, I should say he will be spiritual, humble, a man of devotion and faith.

Exactly. Don’t ask an institution that has been around for thousands of years to change to suit your fancy; there are plenty of churches that can accommodate their beliefs.

To liberals, the Church is a political interest group that should lose its tax exemption. They classify the Church’s teachings as political activity.
Exactly. For example, I believe Jesus is the Messiah and I like non-kosher food. Consequently, I don’t stand outside Orthodox Jewish synagogues and demand they change their teachings to suit my beliefs. I respect their freedom of religion as I expect others to respect mine.
What does this fella think the Catholic Church is?

I wonder what Rod Portman would say if his son was in love with horses? Where does it end?
Spot on!
I reckon most of us choose fo follow God.
