In his last State of the City address, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg bragged about his huge taxpayer investments in education. Now, let me ask you: is there anyone who still believes that New York City cant get big things done? Since were here in Brooklyn, Ill say it again: Fuhgeddaboudit.
Bloomberg was right about one thing only: forgetting about it. Because not only are big things not getting done in New York City on education, even small things arent getting done. According to officials from City University of New York, a full 80 percent of high school graduates in New York City cant read when they graduate. As CBS Local reports, They had to re-learn basic skills reading, writing, and math first before they could begin college courses.
And thats for the students who graduate. New York City has the lowest graduation rate for black and Hispanic male students in the nation, with only 37 percent graduating. But teachers start off making $45,530 with benefits, and max out at over $100,000....

If any mayor did exactly the opposite on every issue of what Mr. Bloomberg or the idiots in California do, they'd probably have a model city.
It depends on your model, I suppose. Mayor Bloomberg's is Detroit.
The question here....what exactly are they doing for twelve years? They have to shuffle everyone around, in some pretend-to-read act? Then graduate them, and discover months later in college....they read mostly at the 5th grade level? I don’t get it.
If this is it...the kid is maximized at age fifteen and the last three years of high school mean nothing much....then let’s let the kid graduate and leave. The money spent on the last three years is totally wasted.
So that's what all of his side shows are about.
Why would anyone bother trying to teach state serfs how to read?
Or, if something they’ve tried doesn’t work, they just try it again, but the next time A LITTLE HARDER. The stupid isn’t in the classroom, it’s in the bully political pulpit SCHOOL VOUCHERS, PRIVATE EDUCATION WHERE PARENTS SELECT AND GET INVOLVED IS THE ANSWER.
You mean to tell me 20% of them can read?
They can’t read, but they do know that global warming is killing us all and that gay marriage is a constitutional right.
And they drink out of smaller soda containers.
Officials told CBS 2′s Kramer that nearly 80 percent of those who graduate from city high schools arrived at City Universitys community college system without having mastered the skills to do college-level work.
There's a big difference between saying that 80 percent has not "mastered the skills to do college-level work" and saying that 80 percent "can't read." Both are a problem, obviously, but the latter (incorrect) statement is far, far worse.
I dont buy it. This means that they cant text and i dont think 80 percent of the kids arent sending and receiving texts.
There’s a big difference between saying that 80 percent has not “mastered the skills to do college-level work” and saying that 80 percent “can’t read.”
Maybe, but all my children read at a college level by the time they hit their teens. Why can’t these kids who are taught by highly paid professionals do it?. If educational results are mainly a product of the home, why do we waste billions on socialized education?
Yet.
But they sure can breed and get an EBT.
Yeaa, bt hv U rd there txts, 4 sur?
That's what they do at my daughter's government school. Last week they watched "Shrek II" in chorus.
Yes, I am the only Freeper whose local school sucks.
We homeschooled our youngest for 8 years. She is mildly autistic. Unfortunately, three teacher SILs harangued my wife for years, insisting that our daughter needed special ed, that only the government schools could provide.
We went to several lengthy meetings over the course of the summer, where the specialists described her IEP (Individual Something-Extra-Special Plan).
In practice, the plan was to put my daughter in the dumb class, where they watch videos on a regular basis.
She's doing stuff she did two years ago at home.
I've lost hope of pulling her out. My wife and I have fought as much as our relationship can take. Now I can only pray.
Thankfully, my eldest daughter will "graduate" from homeschool this year, never having set foot in a schoolag.
Yep, that “Obama phome” woman knew all the ins and outs of hand outs....
43% of all residents of the cities of Detroit and New Orleans cannot read or write.(Spend more money on education, ahem!)
...I don’t hear any teachers coming to the microphone on this. Seems the teachers union would be refuting this?
