Zimmerman gains 100 pounds in six months, wears bulletproof vest; lawyer blames stress

Murder defendant George Zimmerman looks startlingly different from the last time we saw him in court. He reportedly gained a whopping 100 pounds because of the stress of the upcoming trial. The former neighborhood volunteer watchman charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of teen Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla., reportedly always wears a bulletproof vest for fear of being killed.

According to FoxNews.com, 29-year-old Zimmerman also wears a disguise when out in public, which is not very often, and lawyer Mark O’Mara claims his client is in constant fear for his life. “He never feels safe—his security has been cut and he stays inside his secure location all day long due to threats,” O'Mara said.

The excessive weight gain in just six months is due to house confinement and the stress of the approaching trial, O’Mara said, adding that his client’s health is suffering as a result. Zimmerman’s trial is scheduled to begin June 10, but a Stand Your Ground hearing will take place April 27.

This hearing is for a judge to decide if the defendant warrants protection under the SYG statute. If the court rules that Zimmerman killed Martin because he feared for his life and was indeed standing his ground, he gets to walk free and there will be no murder trial...

While this is a great clip, it is very unrealistic.

With a gun pointed at your face you don’t go for a foot shot, or knee shot.....too easy for the bad guy to pull the trigger on the way down......you go for a head or chest....

Not bad but I like the “geek look” for defense

"He should get a reward and a medal for eliminating a thug and drug abuser from society who would have gone on to prey on innocent victims."

Your statement is heinous. It's just plain wrong.

Zimmerman killed Martin out of self defense. I admit that I would have shot him long before I took the beating that Zimmerman took. I'm all about defending life and property.

However, drug abuser is not a reason to kill someone nor is what you think the person might do in the future a reason they should be dead. That's bogus.

The state's case rests heavily on "Dee Dee's" supposed recollection of her phone conversation with Trayvon--possibly invented by Crump before she told them to the investigators.

Zimmerman's 6th amendment rights (to an impartial jury, to be able to confront witnesses against him, to have compulsory power for obtaining witnesses in his defense) are likely to be shredded if what we have seen so far continues--his lawyer hasn't been able to get a complete and intelligible tape of Dee Dee's allegations.

No matter how well O'Mara demolishes the case against Zimmerman, I'm afraid a lot of the jurors will base their verdict on the initial media reports rather than what they hear at the trial.

This whole thing kind of reminds me of the Security Guard Richard Jewell who the FBI almost hounded to death trying to prove he was the Olympic Park bomber in Atlanta. All you had to do was take one look at the guy and you knew there was no way he was the bomber. His life was just destroyed. I’m suprised he didn’t commit suicide.

Looking for a community to come forward and offer him asylum. Sandpoint, Idaho comes to mind.

This shouldn’t get to a trial. It should end in an April Immunity hearing.

Dershowitz has recommended that O’Mara ask the court to dismiss the NEN call as irrelevant since the only incident that matters took place after that call ended. He makes a good point and that takes a whole lot of irrelevant speculation off the table.

This judge knows the law. It is quite clear. If Zimmerman was not doing anything unlawful, and if he had the right to be where he was, and if he was assaulted and under continuous assault until he fired his weapon, then this judge has no other choice than to grant him immunity and end this charade. Failure of her to do so should lead to immediate appeal of her ruling and dismissal.

It won’t look good to a jury.

It will never make it to a jury.

The case against Benjamin Crump might.

Only mirtazapine can do anything like that and it’s not an SSRI.

Bizarre. You’d think stress would cause one to lose weight.

This teaches the lesson: if you ever shoot somebody, don't call the police. Don't even talk to them. If someone asks, you weren't there. Bury the weapon you used, or toss it in the lake; even a $2000 Wilson Combat 1911 isn't worth losing your freedom or your life quality over. Burn the body if you can with a thermite round, or otherwise make sure it is never ever found.

Since the police and the political system now punish anyone who kills anyone of the protected class (e.g., negroes), you must not allow yourself to be taken by them.

That's my view, after watching Feinstein's show in CSPAN today. This country is screwed. Permanently.

Yeah...that’s pretty good.

I was having a conversation at the school where I work with a liberal colleague (nice lady, but liberal - is that contradictory?) who asked me where I stand on gun control. I answered by answering, “Like this,” and assumed a proper shooting position. Her mouth dropped open and nothing came out (which, again, leads me to conclude that she was a nice lady...)

6th amendment rights? That’s so far down the list, no one even remembers what it is anymore.

Both the prosecutor and governor rail-roading him are Republicans.

Different people react differently to stress. Some eat more, some lose their appetite, some drink, some smoke, etc.
