Brief and Direct: Why are Firemen Always the First To Be Laid Off?

After garbage workers, that is.

By: Flagstaff (Diary) | February 25th, 2013 at 08:33

Maybe because we’ll miss them the most.

Because the President has forgotten he’s already been elected and he’s been campaigning across the country to defeat his own idea, there are too many sources to quote regarding the dire consequences President Obama sees if the sequester, or Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA), isn’t averted. So without individual attribution here are some of the services we will lose.

Local first responders–fire, police, EMS.

Teachers.

Military “readiness” and “preparedness.”

Airport security and TSA.

Homeland Security. Border Patrol.

FEMA, FDA, NASA.

(Wait a minute, wasn’t NASA killed last year? Here’s one that’s for sure going to save money: the National Drug Intelligence Center, still slated for a $2 million cut to a $20 million dollar budget. Buy it was closed on 6/15/2012. Why does it need a budget?)

FBI, NRC, the federal prison system, SEC.

Sounds awful, until we notice that these “cuts” come out of a budget that’s already scheduled to increase more than the cuts amount to. And that Republicans have offered to give the President emergency authority to allocate these cuts in ways that are “least harmful.”

That carrier picture is complete BS, it’s a once in a generation event cause by the convergence of:

USS Enterprise being retired

USS Theodore Roosevelt being brought back into service after midlife refueling

USS Abraham Lincoln, a Pacific Fleet carrier, being in Norfolk to begin midlife refueling.

Of the other two carriers, USS Bush just returned from a deployment while USS Eisenhower was just about to leave for one (she just left the other day).

But perception equals reality, right?

I agree, he’s painted himself into a corner with this and people will find that his hyperbole was hype and they’ll question him even more.

For that matter, why is he screaming in horror at his own plan while traveling the country promising money to cities.

Obama, creator of the sequester crisis, decries crises created for political gain

By Andrew Malcolm

Snip—

“Remember now, these aren’t real cuts in current spending. These are cuts in the future increases of current spending. We’ll still be spending more and more and more each year, as we have since Obama took the throne. In fact, he’s been spending more than $1,000,000,000,000 above what the government takes in every single year.”

“But to hear Obama describe the ugly upcoming scenario you’ll probably have to send your kids to school unfed, maybe even naked. See how awful Republicans are?”

government/socialism is the problem

get rid of the EPA, government schools etc.

the only functions of government are military and border control, some local police. what else cannot the free mark do, private roads, private hospitals, private schools etc.

to hell with the oppressive 4 trillion $ per year federal government, and the state and local goveermens too. leave us alone

to hell with these democrat/communist tyrants

My husband is the fire inspector for the city in which we reside. At 10 pm last night, city council decided to lay off five firefighters and close one fire station. My husband has been on the department for 13 years, and in the last 18 months has body bagged more people than he has in the previous years total. Thanks to layoffs or downsizing through attrition, the department is a skeleton crew. It is understandable that belts need tightened and that this concept includes safety forces. What simply amazes me is how city council and all of their support staff/services never have to suck in their guts. Typical politicians.

I feel for you and your husband who I am sure is a dedicated firefighter.

This is a tactic that local Democrat politicans have used for many years to scare the taxpayers into accepting higher taxes.

The threatened cuts will always be to emergency services first rather than the bloated local government employees who do nothing.

Reality is what one sees or physically feels. Perception is an interpretation or extention. I see five carriers, I perceive them to be in port at the same time, a rare event. Perhaps your explanation of what I see may be correct. Still, it is not B.S., are there or are there not five carriers in port at the same time and is that a rare event or not?

Wel, they’re not going to scare us if they threaten to lay off bureaucrats, IRS employees, or if they threaten to end lavish travel budgets for government officials.

It’s as if a household discovered that the breadwinner’s wages were going to be cut 2% and deciding “well, I guess we’ll have to guit eating for a year”.

SPIN METER: In budget fight, sky is falling again
Feb 26, 2013

“the Washington Monument ploy, also known as the Firemen First principle, is at work.

It goes like this: Put someone’s budget at risk and the first thing you’ll hear is a threat to close a cherished national symbol or lay off firefighters and police, when in fact there are other ways to cut spending.

It so happens the Washington Monument is already closed, for earthquake repair. But Obama indulged in the Firemen First principle quite literally.

He appeared at the White House in front of officers in blue uniforms to warn of the consequences of the sequester. “Emergency responders like the ones who are here today - their ability to help communities respond to and recover from disasters will be degraded.”

The law gives little flexibility to agencies to protect favored programs, except for big ones specifically exempted from the automatic cuts, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and veterans benefits.”

Bucshon: Obama’s budget scare tactics phony

By Thomas B. Langhorne
Posted February 23, 2013 at 5:07 p.m.

“The federal government is fairly bloated, and I think we can find $85 billion in targeted cuts to replace the sequester over the next few months,” Bucshon said.

So I guess we're left with the question are
  1. Airport security and TSA
  2. FEMA
  3. FDA
  4. Homeland Security
  5. Teachers (really the DOE & bureaucracy)
worth the attendant
  1. Local first responders [fire, police, EMS] -- (wait, if they're local why should federal cuts impact them?)
  2. Border Patrol
  3. NASA
  4. Military “readiness” and “preparedness”
?

I would venture to say that the deal is worth it, especially when you consider things like the militarization of the police is fueled by federal monies, and things like "Homeland Security" (e.g. TSA) are nothing but a sustained assault (and population-conditioning) on liberties and constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Obama: If Republicans don’t give me what I want I will make planes fall from the sky
By: DrJohn

And soon we’re likely to hear that global warming will accelerate and comets will strike the Earth if Republicans don’t acquiesce to Obama’s demands for more taxes. He has hinted that planes will fall from the sky:

“Air traffic controllers and airport security will see cutbacks, which means more delays at airports across the country,” Obama continued. “Thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off. Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find child care for their kids. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose access to primary care and preventive care like flu vaccinations and cancer screenings.”

How much is to be “cut”? $85 billion on a budget of $3.6 trillion. That’s 2.4%. As of August household income was down 8.2% under Obama and the country had to make do. Now Obama tries to tell us that government can’t do with 2.4% less? Seriously?

He has been lying about the sequester since the debates. The sequester was Obama’s team’s idea:

For all the tough talk, Obama is afraid. He is afraid that the sequester will come to pass and no one will notice. He is frightened to death that America will learn that the government can do with 2.4% less, because then America will begin to wonder with just how much less government can do.

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard always has four carriers in port. They are the retired USS Ranger, Independence, Kitty Hawk and Constellation.

It regularly has a 5th, when an active carrier is there for between deployment overhaul.

The old Philadelphia Shipyard has three carriers in port. They are the retired USS Forrestal, Saratoga (I think she’s been moved down from Newport by now) and Kennedy.

Of the carriers in that Norfolk picture, only two are active and operational. One is retired (although still in commission due to a legal caveat about not decommissioning a nuclear ship until it has been defueled) and two are not in active service.

So the reality may be that there are five carriers tied up together, but the reality also is that only two are active. The perception that it is due to sequestration is dead wrong.
