Reminder to Criminals: Just About Everyone in Texas May Own, and in Fact May Be Carrying, a Gun

Texas has some of the most classically liberal — meaning free of government interference — gun laws anywhere. Take this page of law from TexasGunLaws.org.

The Basics Q: How long is the waiting period to buy a Handgun / Shotgun / Rifle in Texas?

A: There is no waiting period for purchasing a firearm in the state of Texas.

Q: I just moved to Texas, do I have to register my firearms?

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms.

Q: I just inherited / bought a gun from someone in Texas, do I need to transfer the gun to my name?

A: No, there is no state registration of firearms, thus there is no requirement transfer the firearm in your name.

Q: What is required to purchase a firearm in the state of Texas?

A: You will need a valid state-issued ID. Many FFLs will not sell to out-of-state residents. This is due to the FFL’s requirement to uphold your resident state’s gun laws, and the inherient complexity associated with many states.

Q: Can I carry a firearm on my person?

A: Yes, with proper licensing (Concealed Handgun License) you may carry a pistol or revolver on your person so long as it remains concealed. Long guns (rifles / shotguns) do not have to be concealed, but must be carried in a manner not calculated to cause alarm, and do not require a license.

Q: Can I strap a gun on my hip in Texas?

A: No, with some exceptions. Open carry is not legal in Texas, but you may open carry on your own property, in the commission of a sporting activity (competition, shooting ranges, etc.), and while engaged in hunting.

Q: Can I carry a firearm in my vehicle?

A: Yes...

Just out of curiosity - has anyone got some numbers on the total number of gun deaths per year in Texas vs the total number of gun deaths per year in Chicago (Obamaland)?

With the advent of anyone using google earth and looking down upon your property I would make a large roof sign telling those looking what to expect if they are casing my property.

Like small signs pointing straight up..”claymores here”

And another next to mounds..”remains buried here”

Believe it or not, but liberal Pennsylvania has the same answers to the questions above, less one. PA is an open carry state. TX does have one law that I wish PA would adopt. Apparently in TX, you do not need a background check to purchase a gun if you have a CHL. In the absence of abolishing background check laws, it would be great to be able to purchase a gun just using a CHL.

Here is a little graph by city. Houston is #3 on this graph. It is interesting the comparisons. New York does stand out compared to the rest.

Interested to see that myself.

I think here in TX it is the KNOWING that many have guns that helps keep the peace. A mugger, thief, home invader, etc. should very well understand their job carries a risk of ventilation vs. incarceration.

Because of this, road rage is very minimized. I have lived here 2 1/2 years and noticed very few drivers flipping off others or laying down on the horn. Due to the amount of traffic on the roadways, drivers get pretty dicey cutting in and out of lanes, and merging on and off of highways, but they do it without any real rage resulting; a lot of give and take here. It is because of the number of gun carrying citizens. I have only had three bumps of the horn in my direction, and only been saluted once.

An armed society is a polite society is indeed a true statement.

My brother in Texas has a license for concealed carry. Too bad that law passed four years after the Luby’s massacre. I would bet, if they’d had concealed carry at that time, the killer would have gotten off only a few shots before a bunch of legally armed Texans would have drilled him.

You’re obviously not driving on the roads around San Antonio. The 405 around LAX is much calmer.

It’s not the guns, it’s just that the people are friendlier than those from where I come.

Well, little Mexico City don't count.

Do you live in San Antonio? I haven't visited in many years but have heard that the illegals have practically ruined the Riverwalk. Sure hope not.

Texas has no provision whateoever for uncealed carry of handguns. I wouldn't exactly consider that classically liberal. It's a legacy of Jim Crow that I'm going to be helping to put to an end when the legislooters reconvene this year.

Never found anything any different in San Antonio. Probably milder than Houston, if anything.
