His rise and staying power are easy to understand. He has had some great recordings. He sounds terrible live, but much of his recorded music is fantastic. That’s true in spades for his recordings as one of The Highwaymen and in duets with Waylon. In addition to that, he seems like a really nice guy who is not at all full of himself, regardless of what he smokes or what he thinks about guns.
I seem to recall a story from long ago when (probably from when they were both still in Nashville) Ray Price and Willie lived somewhat near each other. Ray was raising fighting roosters, and one of them got loose and killed an animal of Willie’s. Willie DID shoot that rooster.
Willie is just pissed that as a felon he can’t own any.
I don’t mind the pot, but today Willie has given me reason not to be a fan.
Don't know about that. The trouble with senior hippie citizens like Willie is they think their ideas and values, no matter how steeped in pot they might be, should be forced on the rest of us.

You are truly dumber than a brass-headed monkey. Willie did not get into the Songwriters Hall of Fame by covering other artist’s songs. If he had never written anything other than Crazy, Forgiving You Was Easy, or Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, he would deserve our highest praise and thanks.
Maybe there is something to be said for the “War on Drugs.” Obviously, all the pot has turned Willie’s brain to mush.
I’ll put a dollar down betting Willie owns firearms.

Looks like what used to be called “schwag” or something - seeds and junk - back when I wanted to get in with the cool crowd by pretending like I knew something about such things. (Maybe I still do.) Never could smoke the stuff by the way.
