Renowned for their sword-fighting prowess and notorious for their anti-Semitism in czarist Russia, the Cossacks are taking on new foes: beggars, drunks and improperly parked cars.
With the approval of city authorities, eight Cossacks clad in traditional fur hats and uniforms patrolled a Moscow train station on Tuesday looking for signs of minor public disturbances.
The Kremlin is seeking to use the once-feared paramilitary squads in its new drive to promote conservative values and appeal to nationalists.
The southern Krasnodar province — which includes Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics — launched Cossack patrols in September to crack down on Muslim migrants from the neighboring Caucasus. Now they've made it to the Russian capital.
Cossacks trace their history in Russia back to the 15th century. Serving in the czarist cavalry, they spearheaded imperial Russia's expansion in exchange for special privileges, including the right to govern their own villages. In the 2010 census, about 650,000 Russians declared themselves Cossacks.

Be wary of what sort of “Conservativism” they promote in Russia. It usually means nasty stuff from Soviet and/or Tzarist times.

Good point. But still cossak patrol vs Muslim immigrants sounds better than Muslim immigrants vs innocent people.
I believe I read that one, and there are many indisputable points in it. But it doesn’t make Putin, Mr. Nationalize All The Oil And Gas In Russia and Mr. The Fall Of The Soviet Union Was The Greatest Geopolitical Catastrophe Of The Twentieth Century, in any way “conservative”.

Good point. Putin doesn’t make a good Reagan for sure but you have to consider his background. He is pretty conservative for an environment he was born to and his policies are mostly steps in proper direction. He opposes both domestic leftists and Soros. BTW, this “Greatest Geopolitical Catastrophe” quote is picked out of context. Originally it doesn’t sound a bit like a nostalgy for communism.

Start with a Christian mother, live in the last decades of the communist regime, see it from the inside. And Russian history is filled with those on the inside, looking at it and seeing where it’s wrong.
So far he is actively opposing the importing of homosexual culture from us and the EU. He is obstructing the building of mosques in Moscow. Their paratroopers got an airdroppable Orthodox chapel, their new subs have one too. And he has warned us and the EU against the idea that prosperity comes from government. He called it a failed idea that they tried and suffered under. he has also called for a gold based trade currency so they cannot be screwed by fiat countries deliberate inflation. He instituted a 13% flat tax, deducted by the employer with no need to ever file a return. Their national debt is 6% of the GDP.
And horrifyingly, he puts his national interests ahead of the EU and ours.
He’s more conservative than most of the GOPe.
His path to get there was determined by where he was. But he has referenced his mothers Christianity as something he never forgot.

Nationalizing their oil and gas industries made sense. In the post USSR era, Russia was being utterly plundered. Factories, real estate, industries like oil and gas were all being privatized by whoever was strong enough to physicall gain possession of them.
In the oil and gas sector, the EU was moving to gain control of the supplies. Most strife surrounding them in the last decade, has revolved around EU efforts to control Russian gas and dictate supply and prices. The EU does not want Russia to be their Saudi Arabia in control of Europes gas. Furthermore, the EU wants to pay in Euros that are printed as needed.
In such a situation, the Russian government confiscated Yukos after a court judgement of massive tax evasion. It was what was best for the country financially, if compared to letting the EU own and run it all for their benefit.
All of this must seem strange to us, who accept as normal that American TARP funds should be propping up british and European banks, and funding Brazilian drilling.
While state ownership of oil and gas is not classically capitalist, it is the norm everywhere else. For example, in the UK, the State owns ALL rights to oil, gas, coal, gold and silver. And you are not drilling for oil anywhere in England unless you buy the rights from the government.
