The CEO of a huge New York Applebees franchise decided to join fellow fast food CEO John Shattner of Papa Johns in saying that he will layoff workers and stop hiring new ones if the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is implemented. Applebees franchise owner Zane Tankel, announced his plans almost immediately after President Obamas reelection.
The Twitterverse immediately went crazy with plans for boycotts.
One tweet read:
So far Ive seen Papa Johns and Applebees threatening to fire people since their choice didnt win the election. Disgusting on either side.
Others said:
BOYCOTT APPLEBEES NOW.
Add @Applebees to the list of unpatriotic businesses who are firing people because Barack Obama won.
Zanr Tankel announced his plans on Fox News. Tankel is CEO of Apple-Metro which owns 40 New York Area Applebees. Each restaurant employs between 80 and 300 people. Under the Affordable Care Act any employer with more than 50 employees has to offer a federally approved insurance plan to their employees or face a fine of $2,000.
Zane said on Fox:
Weve calculated it will [cost] some millions of dollars across our system. So what does that say that says we wont build more restaurants. We wont hire more people. If you have 40 or 50 employees at a restaurant, and the penalty is $2,000, and youre going to pay $80,000 or $100,000 penalty, there goes the profit in your restaurant. I want to simply say we are looking at it, we are evaluating. If its possible to do without cutting people back, I am delighted to do it, but that also rolls back expansion, it rolls back hiring more people, and in a best-case scenario, we only shrink the labor force minimally. Best case.
Papa Johns CEO John Shattner told shareholders this week he was going to have to add eleven to fourteen cents per pie to the final cost to the consumer.
Shattner was subjected to a whipping on Twitter for his comments as well.
Schnatter defended his plan saying:
Thats what you do, is you pass on the costs. Unfortunately, I dont think people know what theyre going to pay for [Obamacare].
Because Obamacares insurance mandates only apply to workers working more than 30 hours per week, chains like Red Lobster and the Olive Garden have said they will look into cutting workers hours also.
Wouldn,t a boycott encourage more layoffs?
leftists think that hurting business is the solution to everything.
Much like they treat the government, liberals expect business to have an unlimited supply of money and owners to give it all to whatever the cause celebre may happen to be and be thankful to do such.
We had our window, but methinks we will begin seeing in the next few years the adverse consequences to amassing so much debt.
You expect liberals to think logically?
It is now war between we producers and liberals.
Go ahead, make our day.
We can cut you idiots off in your cities with little effort, and wait patiently for you to venture into out territory.
May all your sons and daughters turn out to be rap artists and journalists.
Oh, forgot....they already are.
I am beginning to think that Ayn Rand was indeed a prophet.
yes.
I just posted satire about this. We know its coming.

Just take over Applebesand be done with it. You saddle the business with Obamacare, now you won’t let them adjust to survive.
Just pass the law now requiring business to hire, and change the name to United Socialist States.
Most of these Lefties and anarchists are anti-capitalism and Fabian socialist or communist, so that’s a plus in their book. Let them eat food stamps.
Of course, but that’s how stupid leftists are...
Ayn’s good guys were insane but she had the bad guys pegged!!
Maybe it takes a little bit of insanity to be successful.
It’s amazing. People were laughing at me for saying that Obama’s 30hrs/job was going to cut back hours.
The ignorant (m)asses calling for boycotting Papa John's obviously never took an Economics course. Basic Economics 101: all costs of creating, distributing and selling a product are included in the product's sale price. That price also includes profit for the product creator.
So Schnatter (not Shattner) says he's increasing the price of his (crappy) pizza by eleven to fourteen cents? I don't know what that tells anyone else but it tells me he's making his profit on volume sales of his crappy pizza, not quality.
While I support Schnatter's position on this issue, I've had Papa John's pizza once. That was enough for me.
Absolutely. read “Atlas” again after the 2008 election. A re-read may be in order.
cut the workers hours to 15 per week until they stop with the boycotts, if that doesn’t work, then lay off half of them.
Add @Applebees to the list of unpatrioticracist businesses who are firing people because Barack Obama wonran on raising taxes on job creators and won. All we cared about was Big Big and vaginas.
