A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine cruised within 200 miles of the East Coast recently in the latest sign Russia is continuing to flex its naval and aerial power against the United States, defense officials said.
The submarine was identified by its NATO designation as a Russian Seirra-2 class submarine believed to be based with Russias Northern Fleet. It was the first time that class of Russian submarine had been detected near a U.S. coast, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of anti-submarine warfare efforts.
One defense official said the submarine was believed to have been conducting anti-submarine warfare efforts against U.S. ballistic and cruise missile submarines based at Kings Bay, Georgia.

Thanks for the link. The article suggests that the Russian attack subs are benign because “These are not the class of submarines that can launch intercontinental nuclear missiles.” True but their capabilities and presence is a very real threat to our ballistic missile submarines. In submarine warfare, positioning is everything.
During the cold war we would not let an unobserved sub get near our coast with out 24 7 harrassment for surface and subsurface assets.

And from the air. Let’s just say we didn’t let them get comfortable back in those days. Sadly our level of vigilence and defensive posture appear to be much different now.

Good one !

My brother was a Mariner...One of his best stories was being on watch and seeing an up periscope come into view right in their path.
If there is a Romney win a potential aggressor may be embolden to act sooner rather then later before Flexibility runs out.
I’ll wager there was a US fast attack right on his ass all the way down from the workers paradise.
I’m not sure if I’m understanding the article. This sub has been here one month? If so, why is this info released tonight of all nights?
Crank up the Hoovers. Oh yea I forgot. Nevermind. They’ve been taken out of service also.

The side story is more alarming.
Had been detected key word... couple months back there was one is the GOM for about a month went undetected.
I join the liberals in a lack of concern for the East Coast cities of NYC and Boston.
They deserve the outcomes for the level of security they desire.
I shall never again shed a tear for any of them.
Thanks Typical_Whitey.
I was a surface sailor and never served on subs. However, I was close enough to know one thing; never believe what you read in the press about subs. There’s more disinformation out there than you would ever believe. And reporters don’t have a clue. The story about the sub in the GOM? Who said they were there? Who said we didn’t know they were there? Do you really think we’re going to tell the press “oh yeah, there was Russian sub in the GOM but we didn’t dedect it”? Like someone else said, there was probably a U.S. fast attack sub in his propeller wash the whole trip.
They were probably just coming to lend a hand after Obama’s botched Sandy response.
It’s all about International waters.
*******
Its a bit more complicated than that. You can be in international waters and still be in a position to inflict a lot of damage, which is why you may not have the freedom to operate with impunity. Threats of any kind are generally not ignored or warmly welcomed.
Agreed but with this type of threat to AMerica we have the threat of sequestration out there that will completely devestate our fleet. Too bad Romney didn’t slam Obama’s bayonets comment with what are you going to do wait until the enemy subs are on our doorsteps before you decide to enhance our navy..... a comment like that would have been prescient.
President Romney to the captain of the Russian sub that dares to skirt the U.S. coast after his Inaugural, “I’ll show you my guns if you show yours.”
Very true. During the Cold War we scrambled Tomcat's to intercept approaching aircraft coming toward the ship.
