Here's an odd side effect of South Florida's foreclosure crisis: Some immense homes with pools and three-car garages in gated communities are being rented out to unlikely tenants poor people paying with Section 8 aid.
Among the properties are homes with up to 4,500 square feet of space in private communities with guardhouses and regal names such as "Monarch Lakes" and "Bellagio at Vizcaya."
Some of the owners are teetering on foreclosure and gambling they can earn enough money from the federal housing vouchers to stave off the banks. Others bought the properties cheap in foreclosure auctions and want the guaranteed rental income.
Housing advocates and the government view the turnabout as a win-win for homeowners and the poor, who have access to safer communities and better schools.
But some neighbors are aghast.
After a single mother and her nine children rented a house in the exclusive Isles neighborhood of Coral Springs, the homeowners association adopted an amendment to its governing documents stating: "No Section 8 or government leasing assistance is permitted."
The association is threatening eviction.
Federal law does not expressly outlaw such bans....

And a single mom to boot.
In my day, 9 kids would’ve meant a clean house, tidy lawn and all kinds of money coming in from their after-school jobs and small business ventures. Today it means loads of extra welfare cash, free day care, food stamps galore, tons of free commidity food and all kinds of other goodies.
Why don’t you ride through what used to be Cabrini Green or some other Section 8 housing and get back to me.
Reparations.
Nine kids and Sect 8? Must be fertility drugs. The two best fertility drugs in the US are WIC vouchers and EBT cards.
How much in taxpayer benefits does a single broodmare get for 9 kids? She must be clearing about $5000 a month minimum taking into account housing, food, transportation and medical. And if any or all of those kids is labled disabled, look out. $$$$$ (I think SS disability is $700 a child.)
I lived in a condo for almost a year and discovered after leasing the neighbors below were Section 8. I had to call the police on them twice for domestic violence. They drank heavily, didn’t have jobs, and had a broken down car in front. There was pretty much nothing the HOA could do.
I lived in another, very nice, upscale condo when the foreclosure crisis hit. I used to go to the pool and there’d be a couple sunbathers or a couple senior citizens. It was lovely. Then, some condos went Section 8. The pool became unusable. It was taken over by white trash and gangs, and things were starting to have graffiti on them. We got a German Shepherd.
We moved from the condo to a home in a gated community in an even more, very upscale area- one of the nicest. We were near a nice shopping plaza. In the planned development, there were condos in the center of the hub. Nearly every single week there was a police helicopter circling overhead. My neighbor commented that it was because the condos had gone Section 8. The grocery store’s ingress and egress had to be remodeled and the other stores were locking their doors during the day due to flash mobs. A house behind me that was vacant at least a year obviously went Section 8. I came close to calling the police twice. I think the HOA got rid of them. They were only there a couple months and trashed the $350000+ house. I kept my gun within arm’s reach always. I figured my Shepherd would give me time to get the safety off.
I now live in a guard gated community. We only had 6 burglaries in one week last month so that might be an improvement.
It would be better for the neighborhood if they just tore these houses down now , before the renters do it slowly over a year, and leave the garbage when they move to their next section 8 house.
Lol, you need to get a single home.
I’ve lived in the Philippines. Here’s my restrained reply- Do I ever want to go back? No. Try looking at Saipan. It’s fairly Westernized and just a protectorate.
Singapore is probably the best run nation in Asia. It scores very high on international comparisons. However, I don’t know how friendly they are to immigrants. Used to be a British colony, so English should be no problem.
“Lol, you need to get a single home.”
The last 3 places I’ve lived were single homes, but when a nice subdivision was designed with expensive condo’s that go Section 8, welcome to instant ghetto. There’s no doubt in my mind my neighbor’s house was minimally $500000- Las Vegas, newer, huge, 2 story, large lot and pool.
WOW.... I think I’ll just keep renting. I like being able to leave in a hurry.
“And who pays the utility bills?”
Oh, that’s just a different gov’t program, or one run by the utility itself. Around DC there’s the Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) that Washington Gas solicits donations for on your monthly gas bill.
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I wouldn’t want my million dollar property to decline in value because of one owner, would you?
Very well said. I'll try to remember your turn of phrase.
This is part of Obama’s war on the suburbs.
Basically, they’re not going to allow people to escape the culture of the inner city and they’re going to force it on them.
Oh heck, no! I think it’s terrible that this has happened and I’m also trying to figure out how that house sold for only 13 k. Something is rotten in Denmark. My son is currently trying to buy a home and every - I mean EVERY - house he makes an offer on is going for more than the bank’s advertised price. IOW, there really aren’t any ‘deals’ to be had, despite the over-saturated foreclosure market and the decrease in property vales.
