This past week gay advocate Wayne Besen ran a commentary piece entitled, "Will Chick-fil-A Dig In or Dig Out of the Hole?". I wanted to comment on Besen's commentary which appears in HuffPost Gay Voices (which FReepers may link to but not post as articles).
Besen believes the company appeared to "take steps in a positive direction last week, when Dan Cathy "welcomed campus leaders to a private luncheon in Atlanta to discuss diversity, hospitality and the opportunity to find common ground." "
The meeting was held in secret and included among other groups the LGBT student advocacy group Campus Pride.
Besen makes no bones about this being a slap in the face to what he calls "the Huckabee crowd". I will admit the seeming capitulation was unwelcome to my own thinking.
Says Besen: "If Chick-fil-A truly desires rejoining mainstream America, it will have to come to terms with the fact that it will let down its most ardent defenders. Even a whiff of "capitulation" will infuriate anti-gay activists, who view the company as a beacon of hope in a secular world."
"If Cathy budges even an inch, extremist groups are going to squawk louder than a chicken in a slaughter barn, so Chick-fil-A might as well go all the way and renounce donations to homophobic hate groups and rejoin civilization." ....
He goes on to smirk at Scott Lively's idea - voiced in a recent WND Op-Ed piece - that the Chick-Fil-A August was a sign of changing times and a reversal of LGBT rights. (I had hoped the same thing and thus did not exactly appreciate Cathy's meeting or Besen's smirking).
Besen ends his piece by comparing Chick Fil A's position to that of the fort of Alamo in the Texas Revolution of 1836: According to Besen , if Chick-Fil-A wants to "rejoin civilization" it will have to become gay friendly and to "stop funding hate groups". On the other hand, if it seeks to become "the Alamo of the far right" it will fall as the fort did. Any thoughts would be welcome, and of course I am hoping he is self-deluded and that Cathy's seeming capitulation was nothing of the kind.

Dan Cathy doesn’t have to explain anything, concede anything, or DO anything.
Do these idiots expect him to “turn around” after all the support he received?
Slippin’ one’s falafal (or loofah or whatever - ask BOR for clarification) into another’s piehole outlet just doesn’t sound real civilized to me.
Traditional marriage= civilization
Queer marriage= barbarism
Not a hard equation to figure out.
That’s what gets me so angry, grrrrrrrr, fuming here.
Bravo for that.
Thank you, thank you, THANK you for making that point, which was dawning already in the dim banks of my history lesson memories. Once more, as you stated, “The Alamo fell, BUT THE CAUSE IT STOOD FOR PREVAILED.” Amen.
Are these people delusional? If you oppose homosexual marriage, you are uncivilized? So you need to rejoin civilization??? Is there any logical thought process behind this??? What the heck???
Exactly! What unbelievable ARROGANCE: Chick-Fil-A appreciation day was an earthquake, the gay kiss ins were duds. And yet this gay advocate is warning CFA to “rejoin civilization”?? Un-freakin-believable. I actually felt anger rising in me like heat as I read the piece.
It is so hubristic and arrogant i don’t know whether to laugh or tear my hair.
Bravo, well said.
Actually, the perverts need to regain their morals.
What planet does this fudge packer live on....Dan Cathy just as easily have meet with these people to explain his first amendment rights and that his company already does not discriminate
Right. Why does he assume there was any capitulation? And why would Cathy feel there was any need when his supporters vastly outnumber this drips? The self-delusion and grandiosity of these people is staggering.
Why don’t you just cool your jets and wait to see what actually happened. IF this meeting took place even the reporter said it was supposed to be ‘secret’ so why is he blathering on about it? Cathy may just have been trying to let folks know what Chick Fil A does as a company. He may have wanted to have folks understand his view point. You and I have NO idea what was discussed. Unless you where there and can report back then I am not interested in making comments abiut a good man who has done so much in this country. Cathy and the family are aces as far as I am concerned and your little repeating of a whispering campaign is not going to change that
Now go get a number 1 with waffle fries and sweet tea you will feel better
Will heed your advice. :(
For the record, here is Campus Pride blog with all their blather about ChickFilA but I do not see the upshot of their meeting with Cathy:
