When 14 persons (one unborn), most of them military personnel on the base at Ft. Hood, Texas, were murdered by Islamic terrorist and U.S. Military Colonel Nidal Hasan, America's flags were not lowered to half mast until the next day. Today, by at least 2:30 pm EDT, the order came down from on high to lower our flags in a sign of mourning for the victims of today's shootings inside an Aurora Colorado movie theatre showing the much awaited Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.
In the case of Ft. Hood, Obama had to be bullied into the national gesture of mourning by Texas patriot, Anita Ross:
FYI…the White House/staff had no intention of lowering the flags…in fact, early Friday AM after the “closet Muslim terrorist” had finished his “atrocity against Army” warriors, the flags were raised to “full staff.”In the meantime, Liberal press has already erroneously reported that today's shooter, James E. Holmes was a member of a Colorado TEA Party. He wasn't. Then ABC corrected the story with no apology, and later issued an apology.Anita burned up the phone lines in D.C. and in Texas…Congressmen/women…Governor Perry’s office…White House…all heard from her as she “assaulted the arrogance” of the clueless bureaucrats who mostly despise our military…demanding that honor be shown by lowering the flags.
She was stonewalled, ignored, shunned…everywhere but in Texas.

Don't misunderstand my meaning here. Flags should be lowered when the President decides they should be lowered, but his attitude toward the Ft. Hood killings continues to appall. Read my continuing ongoing reports on today's shooting here.

Your absolutely right, it’s “taking away the meaning.”
And we have a perfectly good and apt adjective for that: demeaning.
Lowering the American flag in the wake of a tragedy is absurd. And that’s what this terrible crime was to these victims and their families — a tragedy. No more and no less. It’s a car accident. It’s a bolt of lightning. It’s cancer.
Those who go along with lowering the flag in response to a tragedy like this have no understanding of this country or her people.
It’s disrespectful to the entire nation, but particularly those who serve this country in uniform.
Obama had to show his solidarity with Hasan. Today he had to work with Holmes in promoting gun control. One was a matter of faith and loyalty, the other a matter of politics.

How come Obummer doesn’t lower the flag to half-mast for the 250 folks already murdered this year in the city of Chicago? That’s 20 times more than the Colorado killings and most of the murdered in Chicago are black. Is Obummer a racist or something, refusing to honor the dead blacks in Chicago?
Absolutely! I was always taught that the flag was lowered for someone serving our country — like the military, a Congressman, senator, maybe a mayor. In the case of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, our country was attacked. This afternoon, when I came back to my hotel, I was surprised when the TV was making a big deal about the local college President (in CA) lowered the college flag. I said, “What is the point of that? The victims weren’t from CA, or from this college.” It seemed stupid and irrelevant. Then I found out that Obama had ordered it. It still seems stupid and irrelevent.
Since I’m more than 2000 miles away from home, my flag is still flying high. It will remain that way.
The purpose behind lowering the flags and keeping them lowered until Wednesday has a much more practical and helpful purpose for the Obama administration. What it does is put politics ‘on hold’ for a number of days in light of the hits Obama is taking for his true from the heart statements in Roanoke last week.
Secondly, it gives him the chance to reinvent himself once again, similar to the bump he got after the Giffords shooting in AZ in early-2011. He can claim a presidential tone, milk it and use it as another opportunity to attack the NRA and 2nd Amendment supporters. The timing couldn’t be better given the push to put us under UN treaties restricting our right to bear arms.
Thirdly, this is an opportunity for Obama to use this massacre as his own Oklahoma City, playing Clinton to the sagging democrat masses.
This massacre is the kind of opportunities liberals love to use for political gain. They are cornered, scared and looking for a way to change the subject. They will use this to the max and the lowering of the flags is just a small first step.
This is mass murder, facilitated and exacerbated by gun-free zone policies, dilution of 2A rights, civility and courtesy in society, and entertainment that values more and perverse violence as art.
It is quite literally a perfect demonstration of what happens to an unarmed society. It's just that the murderer wasn't LEO or military. These people were fish in a barrel.
So no, the flag shouldn't be lowered 'when the President decides they should be lowered'. This is a horrible act of evil but the lowering of the national standard is generally reserved for the deaths of principal figures rather than to score cheap political points at 0bama is trying to do. Some states lower their flags for combat deaths -- this is understandable and in my mind also appropriate.
You should also educate yourself on the difference between half-staff and half-mast. Flags over land fly at half-staff. Flags over water fly ay half-mast. The terms are not interchangeable.
