The Free Republic of today is nothing like it used to be. It’s sad to see everything in this country swirling around in the toilet. We are a first hand witness to a memorable moment in history.
I agree that the country is in decline and that this is an important moment in history but I don't think there's anything wrong with FR. Disagreements between conservatives (even heated disagreements, even nasty disagreements, even disagreements in which one conservative says another conservative is "not a conservative") doesn't change the fact that in my mind FR is the greatest site on the internet. Period.

It's the ONLY place I go for ALL my news, information and commentary (and yes, I do follow the links to the source sites so I do end up being more widely read than just a single-site-person).

You AGREE with samtheman that
YOU, too, support Mr. Romney and his RomneyCARE,
TARP, Sharia, 911 victory mosque, Death Panels,
endless taxes if called ‘fees’, lack of transparency,
support for global warming, past campaigns against guns,
gay marriage by his signature, flipfloppery,
support for liberal judges over Republicans, and endless
dirty tricks and attacks on conservatives
thru surrogates.

How can any of you purport to be conservative?

What is conservative about Sharia, RomneyCARE,
TARP and Taxes?

Ego, inability to see their own failure so keep blame the situation on others (Mitt, GOP, RINO, etc., but never themselves), and most importantly, thriving for the right to boast "I told you, so!" come to my mind. Pick your reason.
Yup.

For a while after Romney locked up the nomination I posted this fact, over and over again, and I'll post it here again:

On April 10, when Rick Santorum effectively dropped out of the race, the vote totals looked like this:

Total Republican Primary Votes for Romney: about 5 million

Total Republican Primary Votes for Santorum + Gingrich: about 6 million

And yet many conservatives, many good conservatives, continue to blame the GOP, the RNC and the "establishment" for Romney.

All Romney did is run for president.

All we had to do was unite behind a single conservative.

Romney did what he had to do.

We failed.

So yeah, let's blame everybody else. Let's blame Bush. Let's blame Global Warming. Let's blame my momma (you can, since she was a life-time Roosevelt supporter, even into the 21st century, but sadly she's no longer with us).

Agreed. This place is the best to get all your news.
I come here and I find posted stories on just about every non-technical subject I'm interested in. (I don't go to Drudge anymore, except occasionally follow links there, not since the Florida primary hatched job on Newt.)

For technical stuff I go to some other primary source sites.

But for all news and discussions, FR is my base.

Samtheman,

I have learned to ignore Dio. He’s a DU in sheep’s clothing. I don’t read his posts when I see his name attached to them.

All we had to do was unite behind a single conservative.

That is exactly how we knocked off Lugar in the Hoosier state. We missed on Dan Coats the cycle before because we split the vote between a handful of regional TP conservatives.

Otherwise I agree with your conclusion. Romney ran for President and only got to vote for himself once. The middle and right of center conservatives won him the nomination.

I'm an ABO.I will crawl to the polls over broken glass to send Obama back to Chitown.

“I’m an ABO.I will crawl to the polls over broken glass to send Obama back to Chitown.”

Perhaps, but after a while, when you continually crawl on broken glass (Bush, Sr., Dole, Bush, Jr., McCain, Romney), and you have no skin left on your knees or your hands, common sense dictates that you ask yourself, “How come I’m the only one willing to get bloody here?...And why am I on my knees in the first place?”

Interesting accusation. I don’t know who the sleepers are but of course they are here. I first read about FR on a leftist site called TableTalk (Salon magazine) back in 1999 when I spent some amount of time arguing directly with leftists. I was accused of being a Freeper and didn’t know what that was. Then I got busy on a job that allowed me little free time and it wasn’t until 9-11 that I got seriously interested in political discussions again and looked up free republic and joined.

But my point is, the leftists on TT were obsessed with FR as long ago as the late 90s so it’s reasonable to think they planted sleepers over the years.

conservative talk radio and the conservative blogosphere to shut down any possibly negative news story related to Romney

That is absolutely true. Prior to Romney apparently winning the nomination, it was possible to find honest criticism of Romney all over the web.

Now it has been purged for the most part.

Apparently, the republican way is to get in lock-step and spin spin spin (lie) about their candidate all the way til november.

Honest, true criticism is viewed as disloyalty, and this by "conservatives" who claim they'll hold radical liberal Romney's feet to the fire to keep him from moving left.

The truth is that Romney is going left anyway and that the ABO's have indicated to Romney that they'll support him no matter what he does, 'cause they have no place else to go, 'cause obama is the devil.

Justice4awe, you continue to put FReepers down
without the courtesy of pinging them.

That is, of course, characteristic of both you
and your Master, Mitt Romney, Author of Death Panels,
and Commander of his Vile Legion of Backstabbers.

So why don’t you consider just going
BACK TO DU where they will appreciate
a backstabbing RomneyBOT who pushes Sharia,
TARP, Death Panels, Taxes, and lying, such as yourself.

In the context of the comment I made, I was pointing out that we have no one but ourselves to blame for Romney being the nominee. We ousted RINO Lugar by lining up behind one candidate. We didn't do that by spending all day calling each other names on a forum and fighting paper tigers.

It's not the "GOP-e" fault Romney is the nominee, it is our fault.

Cut. Print. Perfect.

I'm not a Republican; I'm a conservative. The Republican party never, ever gets to simply take my vote for granted -- they have to earn it, each and every time out, by running candidates whose views on the issues (as demonstrated by their previous track records, while in public office) reasonably align with my own... and I'm the only person on the face of the planet capable of judging whether or not they have, in fact, genuinely done so to my own satisfaction.

They didn't. I won't.

They can try just a wee, little harder next time out, if my vote genuinely is as vitally important to them as they keep yammering it is.

If, on the other hand, it isn't: they can stop sniveling like sulky school girls over it, any old time.

Yup. Today's GOP -- the putative "party of conservatism" -- is roughly where the 'Rats were in '72: running a pro-abortion, pro-"gay rights," anti-gun candidate for president.

That's how horribly, ruinously astray they've gone, as a party: they've finally morphed, en masse, into chirpy, blank-eyed little simulacra of George McGovern.

They're absolutely correct, while clutching their skirts and clucking disapprovingly, that "The Free Republic of today is nothing like it used to be."

Just not in the way they think they are.

I’m not sure whose fault it is that we have Romney this time...or had McCain last time...or had Jr. the time before that...or Dole...or Bush, Sr....But it is true; it IS a fault.

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in the stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.”

The powers that be in the Republican Party have certainly been able to take full advantage of the tactic of fear (”Would you rather have _______________,”) much the same way the Democrats ply fear on many of their constituency groups.

Some of us are just tired of the game...and say, grassroots the whole thing. Get our guy (the conservative who hasn’t been corrupted yet) into the House/the Senate, cede the top of the ticket and work the halls of Congress until we restore America. We don’t need any more “No Child Left Behind” types, any more “Roberts for Chief Justice types” any more Gov’t run healthcare types. We need Constitutionalist types. Period.

I know, I know. Pie in the sky. Hey, if you’re going to dream, dream big. If you don’t...well, it’s just your own fault...

Who do we follow, the GOP-E who hates TRUE conservatives because we are pro-life and against homosexual marriage or God and His laws? When we forget history, we are doomed to repeat it.

2 Chronicles

19 But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;

20 Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.

21 And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?

22 And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.

1 - God heard the prayer of the king and accepted the king's dedication of Israel to that of God.

2 - God will chastise, but has promised that His mercy will continue based on the actions of the nation.

3 - God promises to hear the prayers and will be attentive to a humble people and will dwell with them, blessing them and watching over them.

4 - God promises to the king that He will bless the King, His rule and the nation if the King maintains God's statutes, judgments. In other words, Keep God's Word.

********************************************************************************
5 - God also states that if the nations turns away from God to serve other gods, worship them, then He will pluck the nation up by its roots out of the land and will also cast His house out of His sight.
*********************************************************************************
(Abortion & gay marriage is serving the god of our flesh. Add to that the fact that conservative Christians will entrust this nation to a man who will not seek God's wisdom on how to run our nation because he does not even know God)

What we know is that God is not a respecter of persons, BUT he is a respecter of the office with which that person occupies.

We clearly see that the actions of the king will reflect upon the nation. If the king worships other gods, God's chastisement will “roll down hill.” It will be the nation that will feel His hand against them.

Like Israel, God has judged our nation, a nation dedicated to God Almighty.

Like Israel who was briefly invaded by Assyria, our nation has also been briefly invaded by the very same terrorist ancestors.

Like Israel's hallowed ground being destroyed, our hallowed ground has also been destroyed.

We have been warned, and God's hand of providence has been lifted.

But on that day did we humble ourselves?

No we did not.

In fact, our leaders spoke a curse upon our nation right from the book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 9:10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.

This verse in the days and months after our nation's downfall will be repeated over and over again by our elected officials.

This verse is the very attitude that Israel took after Assyria invaded the land.

Instead of humbling themselves and repenting as God told them to do in 2 Chronicles 7:14, they became hardened and prideful.

They became defiant in the face of God.

****************************************************************************
“You Christians who will not vote for Romney are really voting for Obama”
(You should vote for the lessor of two evils (even though he is evil--we should not trust God, just vote for the guy with the "R" behind his name, no matter what he believes. We have to win even if it means going against what you know in your heart is wrong; so forget your God and His commands and become part of the "world")

God has been warning out nation. But instead of heeding His warning the people of our nation continue to be boastful, proud and defiant in the face of God.

The Democrats of the ‘70s were not the traitors to
the US Constitution that the RINOs and Democrats
of 2012 have become.

No one in 1970 would have allowed Hezbollah to come
across the border by the 10s of thousands and weaponize
them to behead and rape Americans. And yet, Congress
has encouraged that and more by DOING NOTHING of substance.
