About time some public sector workers had to face the music. Private sector workers have been cutting back for years. Wait till they find out they can’t just raise taxes and fix it.

I get the feeling that Scranton won’t be alone in taking this action for very long.

It looks like the hens are coming home to roost.

Stockton, California; Scranton, Pennsylvania, are or will be officially bankrupt.

Let the liberals weigh in. Is the solution more and more tax hikes, or is the solution to cut public spending?

I’m critical of liberals on these tax and spend issues, because they don’t seem to grasp reality. They don’t seem to understand that you can’t simply always increase taxes to get money to pay for public spending. The liberals wail about cuts to public spending, and they wail that such cuts are an attack on public employees, an attack on the poor, etc.

With a mindset that one hates public employees and hates the poor, if you would like to see a balanced budget in our public spending, shows how out of touch some liberals are.

You don’t borrow to meet payroll. If you do, you’d better have a re-structuring plan ready to reduce costs ready to go. Doesn’t sound like Scranton city council has one.

Ah, liberalism.

For those to whom even elementary mathmatics is like quantum physics.

Guess those “leaders” never figured out that comzintas have to be equal to or greater than goezouttas in order for things to keep functioning.

Shove it up your smelly Obamas, Scranton.

We brought our son to the Univ. of Scranton on the 5th for a tour of the campus - it’s a nice place and he liked it very much and is now on his short list. I wonder if the town will become like Detroit by the time he has to make a decision.

So what actually happens to a city that is bankrupt? Has this happened before?

Lefties don't understand the concept of "we are out of money."

They don't understand the concept of money, period.

Like most other northern cities they probably have more former fire, police, public employees on retirement/disability pay living high on the hog down in Florida than actively working in the city. That will bankrupt any city —

while the council wants the city to borrow money. The Scranton Times-Tribune reported there’s no way for the city to take out a loan because it is unable to show it is capable of paying it back.

Council apparently cannot connect the dots. Maybe the council would lend their retirement money to the city?

There is a takeover/attempt of takeover of Detroit's finances by the Michigan state gov. While I can see why a lot of the locals are not happy about it, I think this article gives credence why this might have to happen from time to time.

The Democrats know how to fix this. The problem for them is that if they cut government workers, then they can’t be sure that those new private sector workers will give money to the Democrats.

Sending out paychecks ever two weeks costs a lot. Paying once a month would cut out half the staff, cut postage and handling and supplies, and would leave the city's money in the bank to earn interest. Sure, it may not be much in the larger scheme of things but paying every two weeks is one of the wastes that should have been stopped long ago.
