When a kids see other kids being bullied, current teaching advises them to speak up for the victim. But when the victim is an adult, the common response is to freeze.
"I think that's the next wave we're going to see," said Edie Raether, a psychotherapist and author of "Stop Bullying Now." "It is David and Goliath in reverse. Kids run in packs....and an adult is never in either pack or camp and thus it is more risky to speak up...It is a confusing situation, and a confused mind is frozen, passive."
Raether, who speaks internationally on bullying intervention, intends to expand on her book in its next edition, to include the challenges unique to adult victims of child bullies.
In the aftermath of the bullying of a 68-year-old bus monitor that went viral this week via YouTube, the spotlight on victims of bullying has expanded to include adults.
At least four seventh- and eighth-grade boys riding the bus operated by the Greece Central School District, a suburban district in upstate New York, brought Karen Klein to tears with their taunts. The 10-minute video shows the boys poking her, teasing her about her weight, threatening to egg her house, speculating about who she might rape, and talking about putting a knife in her stomach.
While many viewers of the YouTube video were appalled (a fund has been set up to send her on vacation), some experts were not as shocked. Adults who monitor buses, recess, and lunch are often victimized because of their proximity to the behavior, and because their positions often don't carry the full authority of other adults at school, like teachers and administrators, they said...

When I road the bus in high school, behave or walk - pretty simple.

We never had such a thing. The driver was the monitor. I would never work with kids nowadays, too many risks and ways to get sued.
When did they start installing so-called “monitors” on school buses? I graduated high school in 1978 and I never saw one.
The Prussian school system adopted by the US is designed to create mob mentality. They want uniformity in thinking and “peer pressure” to force the one allowed way to think on any subject—like sodomy is cool.
All curricula is laced with Marxist ideology-—Buckley noted it in “God and Man at Yale” in 51. He noticed all the Atheists/collectivists/group thinkers pouring out of all the elite Universities which used the same Marxist textbooks.
Lincoln would have never ran in a pack as a kid. He learned to think for himself. He had a REAL education and was not a product of brainwashing/conditioning Pavlovian/Skinner-laced textbooks.
Problem with Dewey’s school system-—they kicked out God and Moral Absolutes (McGuffey Readers which taught morality and Bible quotes). Up until the 30’s, all public schools taught Virtue-—a necessary element in a Free Republic which is taught to young children.
Young children are learning to be animals-—act like animals because they removed God. Without God, we are just all animals like Marx says.
We need to get back Classical Education which taught Virtue. (Evil is vilified and Good is admired). They do the opposite in schools today-—they say “Sodomy is Good and Christians are bigots and haters”. It is a lie and throws out the best ethical system man has ever had-—Christian Ethics which was the paradigm in the US for several hundred years.
Nothing has proven greater than Christian Ethics in the history of man—and we have studied every conceivable ethical system in the world. Christianity is responsible for ridding the world of the idea that slavery is good—pederasty is good, child sacrifice is good, homosexuality is good. Their ethics created a “flourishing” people—and I mean that in the deeper teleological sense which produces happiness.

Good Question. I am from a similar school district in NY State. "Make Work" is the NY Gov't motto. One look at granny, and I saw just another ass on a seat just showing up to collect a local Gov't paycheck. It doesn't mean those brats should disrespect her though - 2 separate issues.
Indeed. If I had so much as back-talked a janitor or school secretary, much less a teacher, I’d have received at least two butt-whippings, one from the principal and one from my father.

Yes, and you would think these kids would respect her as they would their own grandmother. BTW, Ronald Reagan was a 69 years old grandfather when elected president.
Regardless of her age, those kids should not be talking to anyone on the school bus like that. It is sad to see the decline in our society.
That’s what my husband said, too. Obviously she had no power and the brats knew that.
It does show our dysfunction as a society from many angles. The other angle I see is the current breathless reeducation campaign in schools against fat people. I found it interesting the little monsters honed on her ‘disgusting’ fat body. One hoped she’d die of diabetes.
