Systemic risk. I guarantee that most ordinary folks have no idea that if trucks stopped rolling all across America, within a short period of time nearly all Americans would all be in a life-threatening situation from major delivery shortages. 70% of all freight that is moved in the U.S. is done so by truck. You (we) depend on that stuff for our survival. A major disruption in truck travel would immediately impact seven major industries, and would bring America to its knees within days due in part to just in time manufacturing, zero-inventory, and the fact that our modern way of life is entirely dependent upon unimpeded distribution chains.

I guess one trucker a few years back made a lasting impression on me.
He only confirmed what rbg81 originally said:
"Pardon me for seeming dense"
Although I guess he coule have said:
Next time, please read the article before commenting. Pretty please?
My mil lives with us her cook book is the back of the box
New Madrid EQ and bridges down.
Terrorists and bridges down.
Grids disrupted due to other causes besides EMP (read debates about that), such as hacking. Or above mentioned EQ.
Is that you Warren Buffet..?
In any case....no trucks = no freight trains.
Since trucks are used to load and unload the freight.

How do you get water out of your well? Electricity?
We got a solar well pump and already only pump the well as needed and have about 3000 gallons worth of storage tanks.
So I dehydrate what I'm not going to use fresh, and it works just as well for soups, stocks, and roasts.
Saves money, and it means I've always got some put back, just in case...

About the same senarios exist should the ships or rails become idle..... Trucks are one link in the delivery system for most goods.
It always cracks me up when clowns whine about all those filthy trucks hogging the highway.
A couple of days (at most) without them and we’d all be wishing we had a horse drawn wagon to go to the rail yard to do our shopping.
Has the upcoming cyber attack in June, reported by the main lame media, been verified?
........... How to Serve Man, like in the Twilight Zone
That was a good one.

I didn’t read about that; I’ve just read stuff lately here and there about jihadis getting into hacking, and of course the Chinese are pros at it.
Remember the big electric outages a few years ago? Maybe 2002, or 2003? I can’t remember. But there was a lot of discussion on FR and I concluded it was jihadi hacking.
A note of preparedness, something to watch out for as indication that someone/some thuggish gaggle of evil is planning this aspect of shutting down the economy: watch the news reports this summer, to see if someone is doing a bit of ‘training’ for terrorizing the trucking concerns traveling the interstates. Look for something like two or three widely dispersed ‘isolated shootings’ at truckers inroute.
Check, check and check. As it is now, I might go to the bank or need to use cash once a month. If the big whatever lasts for over a month then everyone will be in up to their necks and cash will be quickly slipping into worthlessness.
I can see Hussein causing chaos in the trucking industry when he declares martial law and curfews. Yes, some trucks are required to limit drive times to certain hours and total hours but many aren’t. If he sets in place curfews, can you imagine how many companies won’t be able to produce much less ship? Think how quickly he’d swoop in to “save” those industries.
Oh - I read about that virus thing. On another site technical people were discussing it and I understood a tiny fraction of what was said and it really did sound innocuous, as the fed site directed people to some other site to find out if you had the virus or not. They deemed it innocuous. But what do I know...
Not to worry—I wasn’t offended. I have a pretty thick skin. Just don’t think its likely the trucks will stop rolling save some extraordinary catastrophe.
I contend you will still find plenty of people willing to drive in the midst of riots and mayhem if the pay is high enough. And they are allowed to be armed.
