At one point, Santorum emphasised how important it was "that we win the House back and that we take the United States Senate", omitting the number one aspiration of Republicans across America - taking back the White House from Obama.
Santorum probably hasn't damaged Romney with his graceless speech today - but he has damaged himself. Having run a highly commendable race on a shoestring, he had an opportunity to lift himself straight away into the top ranks of his party's leadership with real prospects of victory in 2016 (if Romney loses in November) or even 2020.
But by making the speech all about him, rather than his country or his party, Santorum ended up looking like the smaller man.

I have spewed no hate. I have accurately described you and your delusions.
I think it is refreshing not to see a man give in to the “oh let's all just get along and be friends” mentality that exists in politics today. There is no reason a resignation speech should have to become a pep rally for a man you think is wrong for America.
“Newt won his home state.”
LOL. He’s won nothing else. Finished dead last in 5 of 10 Super Tuesday states.
Smell the coffee. It’s been over for Newt for at least a month. Period.
And that’s not hate. It’s cold hard fact.
Won his home state. For sure. Admission contrary to interest.
Case closed.
Romney congratulates Santorum for suspending his campaign. Romney then goes on to say that this has been a good day. And you expect that Santorum is going to go all smoochie over Mitt and throw his delegates to him. LOL
I hope Romney has enjoyed his vicious campaign tactics and that he is feeling all warm and fuzzy right now. All glory is fleeting and he is going to find out the hard way what that means.
He will soon be running against someone just like him. Where’s the popcorn?
Rick’s polling numbers in PA were falling. Can you imagine how bad it looks if he lost his own state? It simply means the people who know him best do not like him.
Newt won his state of Georgia, Mitt won MI & MA. If Rick lost PA, that wipes him out for good politically. So he was smart to quit before the final nails in the coffin were struck. He will now endorse the front runner in due time to secure a position in the admin.
The day before he quit, I had remarked to my wife that Ricky had all the stage presence of a guy running for town council in a very small town. BUTT even that apparently was an overreach and an insult to Town Council’s everywhere.
“Sheer disgust should prevent any reasonably thoughtful conservative from ever voting for him.”
Amen! As much as I dislike and am utterly repulsed by “the Socialist/Marxist dimwit in charge, I despise his arrogant, narcissistic and condescending, self important manner.
Come to think about it...McLame, Goober Gramnesty and Luggy Lugar from my home state of Indiana provide me a reasonable, thoughtful reason not to vote! Romney...gets drilled by 10 points Loser!
The Republican establishment bought and brought this on, now they own it!
Oh, the excitement is so riveting! paaaleeez!
If Newt had stuck in out in the house even resigning as Speaker but keeping his house seat he would be the likely nominee now. Newt quit. Newt goes away a decade and comes back expecting to magically waltz into The White House? Newt has a major trust issue. His message is good but his enemy is His Own Actions.. That cost him the primary that and that alone. If he had wanted POTUS so bad then why did he not run for and hold another office to show Conservatives he could be relied upon?
Yes, but the truth is that it’s more than that. He knew that he was not going to be the nominee in any event. Winning PA would not do it. Losing PA would mean not only that he would not be the nominee, but also that his career would be over in toto. There was no sense in fighting Gettysburg and risking total annihilation when he knew he was going to lose this war in the end in any event.
Re-reading your response, I guess that’s actually what you were saying.
