Local breaking news; no linkable sources yet.
The Battle Mountain Humane Society animal shelter in Hot Springs, South Dakota burned to the ground this afternoon.
No human injuries involved; one known animal death . At last word, a full accounting of the animals was on-going.
The woman who runs it had for years operated privately at her own expense and sporadic private donations; this was her dream.
Where do we send donations?
Please keep us updated on this. Let us know the status of the animals and where we can send donations.
Thought that this might interest you. As soon as a V station posts a story on this, I post a link.
I’ll get that information ASAP. THANK you!
Will do Thank you! Problem is, the local paper is a weekly; and the “local” TV stations, ‘to protect their advertisers’ don’t post televised stories until the NEXT day. I’ll be finding out what I can tomorrow, and then post it.
Final tally is 9 dogs and 1 cat lost; 0 human casualties/injuries.
Anyone desiring to send donations can mail them to:
Battle Mountain Humane Society
27254 Wind Cave Road
Hot Springs, SD 57747
Thanks everyone. FReepers are awesome!
Oh, that’s too bad. Do they know yet what the cause might have been? Didn’t they have a sprinkler system?
Not sure about a sprinkler system. The cause is still under investigation.
Since it was day time, most of the dogs would have been in the outdoor runs, or it could have been much worse.
First you have a crappy life, then you burn to death.
awful
Check your FRmail, please...
Thanks for the info. I’ll get a check off in the morning. That hit a little close to home. Have drivem by there many times, but never stopped.

I grew up east river in South Dakota. We have the corn, but you west river folks have the pretty stuff. Glad you pinged the doggie list.
Poor little souls.
Donation will be sent.
Ping to a neat lady in need...
Im the wife of a FReeper and wanted to post. Im a girl scout troop leader of two troops and the girls have just got done with their cookie season. One of my troops are daisies and they are currently working on a book all about animals. They can earn badges for making a cookie and monetary donation to organizations. Im an avid animal lover and this stuck me... We are boxing up supplies as we speak to send ourselves, but my girls will be sending a monetary donation for the fur babies as well as cookies for the folks trying to care for them in this unfortunate time. The girls will be working on cards Saturday at our troop meet to send and they will truly enjoy helping you guys out. Thank you for all that you do!
Posting for ApplegateRanch via telephone dictation his modem went down. Update one person hospitalized injured rescuing dogs. He will borrow computer tomorrow. Thanks everyone.
On behalf of Tonia, the board members and the animals we serve, we would like to thank you all of you who came (and are still coming) to the aid of these poor creatures. It is a devastating loss, especially those beloved animals who perished in the fire, yet, from the ashes will rise a better and stronger, safer , Battle Mountain Humane Society.
We must persist on behalf of those who can not help themselves. For those of you who were not able to come out yesterday. The love and kindness of people who came to help and give love to these bewildered animals was enough to make the hardest heart flow with tears. Their little faces where so happy to receive the petting and warm love they were given , even if only for one day , it was pure joy to an otherwise sad heart. Thank You Thank You , Thank You All, See the posts below for Tonia’s address at the BMHS were you can give whatever you can ....Bless Each and Every One of you . Jerry Cochrane , (You are all a blessing to us ))
