Not that long ago in Western civilization the unwanted babies were just tossed out alongside the road to die or to be picked up by whoever wanted them. This was how the foundling hospitals got their start: people taking it upon themselves to rescue those infants who were abandoned after birth. Of course, in Germany they were more advanced like the "ethicists" of today and just killed them or sent them off with special nurses to die.
