In his circuitous path to the top of the primary polls, Rick Santorum has presented himself as the pure conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. But an extensive review of newspaper archives and interviews with officials involved in his successful 1990 congressional race against Rep. Doug Walgren (D-Pa.) suggests that Santorum was cut from a similar GOP cloth as his current adversary.

Rick Santorum Used to Cast Himself As Progressive Conservative and Non Reaganite In His First Campaign

In his circuitous path to the top of the primary polls, Santorum has presented himself as the pure conservative alternative to Romney. But an extensive review of newspaper archives and interviews with officials involved in his successful 1990 congressional race against Rep. Doug Walgren (D-Pa.) suggests that Santorum was cut from a similar GOP cloth as his current adversary.

If you hear the description of a candidate who making his first run for Congress in the early 1990s promised not to be a Reagan Republican, fashioned himself a progressive conservative, said he was impartial on unions and stayed vague on abortion rights, you would probably think of Mitt Romney.

Santorum always casts himself as steady lifelong conservative, but his political career and record shows that he would not follow Reagan-ite principles, but in a similar Romney-like fashion: a progressive that was a hybrid of G. H. W. Bush and G. W. Bush.

So the “offensive quote” attack from the Romney Slime Machine has Santorum saying he’s against government intruding in people’s lives.

That, of course, is a Reagan idea.

Why, oh why, in blue, democrat Pennsylvania in 1990 would Santorum distance himself from the name, Ronald Reagan, but not from the policies?

All of the Romney Slime machinations are lies. All of their covert supporters are liars.

Here’s shocker for you: Santorum was NOT pro-life when he originally ran either. He was converted by pro-lifers from Allegheny County DURING that campaign. He became, and has been for two decades, a different man, much different. guess this is all they have against him that he USED to have different, less mature views. Bob

Funny, I don't recall Santorum trying to run to the left of a Dem on abortion like Romney did. What a hatchet job.

Give me a break (not you, the writer)! 22 Years ago I would have been supporting the Occupy movement. By my estimation, he was twice the conservative I was at that age. It wasn’t til my mid 30’s that I began seeing things through a parents eyes and became conservative..

Let's see, McRomney who has changed positions so many times you would get whiplash trying to keep up with those positions or Santorum?

The McRomney slash and burn operation is not working in Michigan, maybe some slander on free-republic will work!

What a laugh watching the McRomneynites work up a sweat trying to get this socialist ding dong elected!

Good luck! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

*Yawn* Let's see... we've been supporters of Santorum for years, with his downfall being the support of Arlen Spector. That being said, we've been following his record closely enough to know he's a millions times better than romney and a good option if Gingrich can't get his act together.

Either way, if we can get romney out of contention we have a viable candidate in Santorum or Gingrich. I prefer Gingrich, but damned if I'll attack Santorum knowing clearly enough about the man to know he'll make a great president and represent conservatism as well as possible.

I'm frankly sick of seeing Freepers attack the last two viable candidates in the race. We know we need to get rid of romney, let's at least do that before we consume one another.

"While the conservatives destroy one another I'll walk right into the nomination and inflict my disease like liberalism on all of them..."

Bingo. Not sure where the the "Santorum Used to Cast Himself as 'Progressive Conservative' idea came from since I can't find it in this writeup (although I did read quickly).

whoa...a highlight of not even one sentence, unquoted (no quotation marks), in a newspaper article from 1990.

You absolutely nailed it !

On close examination - he sounds like another politician who will say anything you want to hear in order to get elected.

Here’s an interesting video I just watched:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXqDVTdei30

Santorum says that keeping taxes down and regulations low is not part of traditional conservatism.

The more I learn about this guy the more I don’t like him.

I don’t think conservatives are destroying each other. I believe our conversations have been infiltrated a long time ago by people who want to discredit all conservatives.

Real conservatives don’t destroy, they fight with ideas and win on those ideas. Romney, Paul, and Obama destroy their opponents, not conservatives.

That's the problem. The sweater vest groupies don't want to learn more about him. I used to like him, but I too, have come to dislike him the more I learn about him.

Newt: I’m from progressive tradition of reform

Yes, he uses it to describe reform. In terms of other areas such as the environment, I agree Newt has articulated ideas that are not truly conservative.
