Rick Santorum: The Right Man At The Right Time
The Right Elective Decisions ^ | 12/14/2012 | Chris Davis

Posted on 01/14/2012 6:39:15 PM PST by writer33

I am a big fan of Michele Bachmann, and I supported her candidacy for President of the United States. When she dropped out, I was forced to survey the field. I immediately ruled out Mitt Romney and Ron Paul – neither of which are conservatives. That left me with three people: Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum. But who would I vote for when the primary came to my state?

I knew of Newt Gingrich’s record in the U.S. House of Representatives and Rick Perry’s record in Texas, but all I knew about Rick Santorum was that he was a solid social conservative. But where did that leave him on fiscal affairs? So that meant doing research – listening to hours and hours of You Tube clips from the candidate and reading everything I could get on his policy positions and voting record. What it didn’t mean was surfing the internet for other people’s opinion on the candidates. I could get all of that I wanted in the mainstream media and none of those were good opinions.

Did the federal government shrink or grow under Newt’s leadership?

Thanks for the ping.

It amazes me that many people accept whatever the lib sources say about Santorum. Like you, I have also watched videos to research what actually came out of Rick's mouth, which is a quite different story from what the posters and pundits say. The are ether too lazy to research, or just want to discredit Santorum in favor of their candidates. One poster criticized his sweater vests. What a Tower of Babel this place is!

I like his story, view, an background. The problem I see is his losing his senate seat. Newt had a tight reelection and won Rick lost his. Electability is everything in this election Newt is the only guy that has a chance against Obama no matter that others may fit my definition of a true conservative,,,

Newt worked to balance the budget. Mission accomplished.

The government still kept growing. That’s not a conservative accomplishment.

Two completely different eras in politics. In 2006, Republicans got their butts handed too them and a lot of people that were trying to help G.W. Bush went down in flames. Gingrich was lost since out of the picture then.

I just base my view on electability. I think its hard to compare years but he was thumped in 2006 if it was close I could believe times have changed but he lost badly and six years is not enough time to change the negatives that caused voters to chose the other guy

I'm for Perry because he is the most small government conservative and has had the executive experience.

He KNOWS the depts he will cut even when he can't name them in a debate. I don't remember any of the others naming TWO!!

I hear the Newties throwing around the word “true Conservative” like a cheap token to buy off the gullible. A man who isn’t faithful to one he has given a sacred vow will not be faithful to one who has given him his trust. Not very “conservative” if you ask me.

True statement... If your talking about ensuring Romney gets the nomination..

I see that logic isn't one of your strong suits. How is voting for someone other than Mitt Romney going to ensure that Mitt Romney gets the nomination?

Did the federal government shrink or grow under Newt’s leadership?

Now now, you know very well that there is no place for facts in this argument. Emotion is king here, and you must be made to believe that the world is going to end if you don't support McNewt. Never mind his leaving office in disgrace after only four years as Speaker. Never mind his lies about balancing the budget. Never mind that income tax rates remained higher under his leadership than they are today. Never mind his policy positions on using the power of government to control CO2 emissions. Forget his statements about amnesty for illegals. And pretend you never heard him comment about how 300 pages of the Obamacare bill "are actually pretty good". And please don't pay any attention to his promise to include those pages in his GingrichCare bill. All you need to know is that a vote for anyone other than Gingrich will mean that Romney/Obama will win.

I am sick and tired of all this non-rational BS that I keep hearing from the McNewt-bots.

Newt worked to balance the budget. Mission accomplished.

The budget hasn't been balanced since 1969. In ever single year that Newt Gingrich was in Congress, the national debt increased. Every single year.

I realize that you want to relive the glory days of the Clinton Administration. But Clinton lied when he said he balanced the budget. And now Newt Gingrich is doing the same thing. He should be ashamed of himself.

I like Perry, but so much depends on South Carolina and whether he's going to feel it's worth it to go on to Florida. I could easily see Perry as POTUS. There are a lot of things I like about him.

This is what I mean when I say you can't compare Santorum's last loss to Newt's last victory. It was two completely different eras in Washington/politics. 2006 was a devastating year for Republicans.

Newt’s not as much of a contrast with Romney as Santorum is. The most conservatve candidate will win. We’re repeating history, folks. Why are we going so crazy over this?

If Santorum does manage to get the nomination, couldn't he do better than Newt for a running mate?

Wouldn't he have to?

No, but it would be the prudent thing to do. And likely the smart thing to do.
