Agency Says High School Diploma May Not Be Used as Hiring Requirement
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 7 Jan 2012 | John Semmens

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is warning employers that requiring new hires to have a high school diploma violates federal law.

“The deplorable performance and almost total lack of standards exhibited by the nation’s public schools cast a pall of considerable doubt over the equity and utility of using high school graduation as a criteria for employing a person,” declared Daniel Blunt, spokesman for the EEOC.

“Supposing a person has a diploma, what does this signify?” Blunt asked. “Standardized tests reveal that a remarkably large percentage of high school graduates are distressingly stupid. Even if graduates are less stupid than non-graduates as a general rule, using a diploma as a purported screening device is still suspect.”

“Supposing a person lacks a diploma, does this mean he or she doesn’t need a job?” Blunt continued. “I’d argue that those without diplomas are among the most needy. Employers have no right to reject these people just because it might cost them money if they hire an incompetent person. It should be clear by now that this Administration will not allow pursuit of profit, performance, or efficiency to trample human rights.”

In place of using a high school diploma as a guide to hiring practices, the EEOC advised employers to develop “job-related” criteria. Whether an employer’s adopted criteria is adequately job-related is a judgment that the EEOC reserves the right to make on a case-by-case basis. Employers are cautioned against assuming they can simply copy criteria the EEOC has previously approved for similarly situated firms.

Yet another government incursion on “free” enterprise.

Love to say that I am shocked but it would be a lie.

Something that's not satire is that a diploma from the Kansas City, MO Public School District does NOT have to be accepted by any university (or HR department, I imagine) in the country, because the district lost its "provisional" accreditation. It's been reported that the KCMO-PSD is now the worst school district in the country.

Quite true !
The GED takes extra effort of achieve !
The regular HS degree frequently just shows ‘social progression’, standardized testing not withstanding .

Back in the 1980’s we used the language “high school diploma or equivalent” when advertising for underground laborers. We did get in trouble with the EEOC because the job did not require reading or writing, let alone a degree. Of course, making little rocks out of big rocks with a 16# hammer doesn’t require much but they had to fill out tonnage reports and follow panel indicators to get to their work locations. Also, once hired, the illiterate would be forever stuck in the entry level job. No satire there.

Hm, this may be satire, but Rush was talking about it this week that some agency had floated the idea...sent out a statement. So there may actually be some truth in it...

Would eliminate a whole lot of B.S.!

Well, John, you have taught me to always check who has written and article before jumping in with a comment. Great Satire and, once again, very close to the truth.
