Rick Perry’s Perry, Iowa Rally-most patriotic event ever, or most patriotic event of all time?
Washington Post ^ | January 2, 2012 | Alexandra Petri

Perry,Iowa — After witnessing the Perry rally in Perry, Iowa, I have a sudden urge to rush out, purchase a firearm, and start rearing eagles. And if it had that effect on me, you know it was potent stuff.

The Perry rally at the HotelPattee was far, far nicer than the Santorum rally. Santorum stood on the stairs and addressed a tepid crowd of people without amplification, only four of whom were holding signs, while someone vacuumed in the background. Perry had a country music performer entertaining crowds in a nice room that Santorum seemed unaware was part of the building. The crowd was large and energetic. They shouted, “Amen!” and waved flocks of Perry signs. They interrupted him with tumultuous laughter and applause.

...It was all so aggressively, enthusiastically appealing to all patriotic impulses as to be very nearly cynical. “Here I am! Send me!” Perry volunteered, in the words of the prophet. The crowd went wild. You couldn’t stand there unmoved as two governors, two veterans, a country singer, and RickPerry, with tears in his eyes, begged you – in front of a mural with grain on it – to “have my back tomorrow at the caucuses, and I’ll have your back the next four years in Washington!”

You felt that it might be almost cruel to send this man to Washington, a place he so clearly hated. But he had to go, because Isaiah had said so. Next I was expecting a yellow SupportThe Troops bumper sticker to emerge from the wings shouting, “I, too, endorse Rick Perry!” as several eagles flew overhead in formation and someone drilled down into the middle of the assembly to release a flood of oil and Jesus glanced down from the sky and nodded a manly nod, as though he approved....

I fully respect your right to disagree with my comments.

The tagline, however, and for your information, is a relatively well-known quote from the playwright George Bernard Shaw. There may well be another saying about ‘teaching pigs to sing’ (which may or may not be relevant to me or anyone else) but it has an entirely different meaning.

While I fully expect you PerryBots to be incapable of fact checking before your attempt to indoctrinate others, it’s funny when you’re so easily refuted. It’s ok though, because I’ve dealt with liberals all my life, so I’m used to having to hold someone by the hand and teach them the error of their ways. Here’s the quote with a reference for you, so you don’t have to engage in liberal babblespeak. (Not to fret, I’m sure you still will.)

“I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.”

-George Bernard Shaw

She was obviously trying to be a little snarky but just as obviously impressed with the enthusiasm for Rick Perry.

Pretty sad comparison between his rally and that of the Other Rick.

Way to go, Nita. It would be fun to tick off the elites, wouldn’t it.

Had to hear some snarky comments about Perry in Bible class this morning (Episcopal church - everyone liberal but me and 3 others and the 3 others keep their mouths shut)

Just got on this thread and I’m sure your remark has been contradicted many times. Except for the first debate, Rick Perry has done fine. You just have to get used to his style. It’s a little different, but it works.

Once more, thanks and congrats for your patience in thoroughly refuting all the false claims propogated about Rick Perry by people who don’t like him and who feel it necessary (for some reason) to get on Perry threads and say so.

But I think everyone learns something from your posts. I know I do.

Except those who refuse to listen or learn.

And by ‘all’ I mean all the little disrupting clan recently formed here.

Please take your dem talking points and go somewhere else.

Or else declare the name : gotta name? gotta name?

Of the person you are supporting. I’m sure he or she is perfect but give us a chance to attack your candidate as you seem to enjoy attacking ours.

I’ve noticed that you work better when you have a compadre to agree with you. It’s kinda pathetic, but also annoying.

The Perry campaign in of itself is one big giant gaffe, this flip flopper's entire career reeks of brain fart.

All the Perry cultists are crappin' their britches now since their cult leader is in a tight race for the bottom and there is nothing that can be done about it.

Ricky's campaign has done the big endo, Buh bye Ricky...

Speaking of El Rushbo (per your tagline), Rush was really enthusiastic about Perry on his show today.

He absolutely loved Perry’s confrontation with the Politico guy who looked like a bowl of rice pudding after Perry got through with him.

And I loved the Washington Post article. She was trying so hard to be snarky and make Rick Perry look stupid. but instead she made him look really good.

I think before she left the rally, she decided Perry was a guy sent from God, but, of course, she had to play it another way.

Ignore all the ‘smarter than you’ dummies who are claiming to know the exact wording of the saying.

I’ve heard it said many ways and not sure anyone knows the origin or that it matters. Shaw may have said it first,or repeated it.

My daddy always said, “never wrestle with a pig—you get all dirty and besides the pig enjoys it.”

But whatever, the disruptors who come on this thread are pigs and we’d all do well to ignore them completely.

I respond to anyone who has a serious question or doubt that I can help with. I do not respond to these pigs. they obviously enjoy it.

...This morning I see that Rupert Murdoch tells Iowans to support Santorum.

I saw that. Fox is really hoping to keep things up in the air so Romney can limp ahead as the "front-runner" into NH with 24% of the electorate. Pathetic.

Odd. I thought the hallmark of a gentleman was respecting ladies and not decending to gutter slime Dem tactics.

Perry cultists epitomize slimy Dem tactics and use them against anyone who disagrees with them, not unlike the typical lemming Obama supporters.

All those donation dollars flushed down the toilet, so sad...

It must be true what they say: Gail Collins really is teaching a class at the Learning Annex as a backup for when the Times falls to ribbons.

Thanks for posting this video of yesterday’s rally. It sure is different from the one Petri describes.

When he referred to Isaiah, by the way, he was asking the voters to say “Here am I” along with him to take back America. One of lefties’ favorite tactics is to paint conservatives as thinking they are pretending to be something that they are actually only humbly aspiring toward.

Love Petri’s describing the conservatives who want the old to disappear as not being in evidence today. She has that one as backwards as can be. They’re not in evidence because they don’t exist. It’s Obama whose “care” plan cut $500 billion from Medicare and his committee who is talking about people over 70 as “units” who are not entitled to post-stroke care other than making them “comfortable.” How comfortable are they going to be when they know the doctors are not allowed to treat them? Come on, Petri, sarcasm and ridicule of patriotism are fine if that’s your thing, but don’t tell us reality is completely the opposite of what it is.

How many clever readers of the Washington Pest are going to read this and swallow it whole? Well, those who wanted to in the first place, I guess.
