I am needing some help in buying a gift for my husband please. I have about $80 left to spend for this christmas gift. He knows the other gifts he is getting and I would really like to surprise him with this one. I know he would love a good scotch. Money has been very very tight until about a month ago and the best scotch I have seen him ever buy is Makers Mark but he'll say that it is okay but not great. I have no idea what is good in this price range. I read a prior post and it gave few price references. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much & Merry Christmas to all!
After 2 or 3 ... does it matter ?
Ok, this really has nothing to do with your question but ok maybe.
I would love to enjoy a nice drink in the evening. Is scotch the sort of apartife that would be good?
Is it a drink enjoyed listening to music in front of the fire?
I really don’t have a clue here.
Be genteel in your slamming of my drink ignorance,
Give him a gift certificate to BEVMO. With eighty bucks he can buy three bottles of pretty good Bourbon or Canadian or Irish or Scots Whiskey. Not a great bottle but a good bottle. You can’t go wrong by letting him buy it himself Lil.
and as the other have said a single malt is your best bet, not a blended scotch whiskey. Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are both very good but taste a bit different. Gelnfiddich is a bit darker and more rich flavor.
You might also try a smaller distillery but stay in the single malt area.
Good luck and you sure are a nice wife!
Scotch tastes like horse piss.....
And you know this because.........?
In any case have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year.
Strictly depends on his tastes. Isla Scotches are extremely peaty and strong. Lowland Scotches are mild. Highlands Scotches are in between. I would suggest “Highland Park”, it is an annual award winner and quite lovely.
Gunner
Another vote for Oban.
A six pack of Bud and one of those man snuggies should work instead of the Scotch.
Hey, back off now, just trying to help her save some money.
Bowmore 18 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey - nice peat flavor
Macallan 18 Year Old Fine Oak Single Malt Scotch - always great
Glenmorangie Scotch Single Malt 18 Year
Hard to go wrong with any of these.
The funny thing is you can tell your friends you got him an 18 year old for Christmas!
I think this is the meaning of the term bourbon. Somehow the people (legislature ?) of Kentucky were able to claim the term bourbon as theirs. So whiskey made in Kentucky can be legally called bourbon while whiskey made anywhere else in the world cannot use that term. In other words if it is bourbon it was distilled in Kentucky.
Price depends on where you live. Is there a Costco nearby that sells booze?
All that being said does he like dark, smokey,or peaty scotches? How does he feel about blends versus single malts? Most are bottled and sold as 12 year old but they also sell them at 18 years old and up but the price can escalate pretty quick too.
It is hard to go wrong with Glen Fidditch or The Glenlivet (my personal favorite and is very smooth), both are 12 year old single malts for around $38-$45 here in Washington with most of that being taxes. California Costcos used to sell The Glenlivet for around $24. If he prefers blends Johnny Walker makes a Red, Black, and Blue with each color representing more age and higher prices.
Laphroaig is tends to be pretty smokey flavored and more expensive
Good luck and enjoy!
You’ve read it to death but I’ll chime in here...Makers Mark is a FABULOUS bourbon. At $50 + for a 1.75 liter bottle, it’s anything but rotgut.
In the event of this type of simultaneity it is recommended that you each spin in a circle three times, click your heels together twice, and say, “Oh dear Freeper Santa won’t you please bring Fightin Whitey a case of Glenmorangie Original.”
(Worth a try anyway.)
These threads come up about once a week and are always enjoyable. If there is one thing FReepers know but won’t kill each other over debating, it is a good spirit.
hmmm.....Makers Mark uses the spelling whisky on their labels so they have some splainin to do eh?
