CNBC presidential debate: Winners and losers
The Fix ^ | 11/09/2011 | Chris Cillizza

WINNERS

* Mitt Romney: The former Massachusetts governor was on friendly territory tonight with an economic-themed debate set in the state where he was born. The crowd was very much on his side — cheering virtually anything he said.

* Newt Gingrich: The former House speaker has happened onto a winning debate formula. He bashes the media at every turn, says the format of the debate is ridiculous and throws out red meat — fire Bernanke! — that gets the crowd on his side early on. With Cain’s problems and Perry’s brain freeze, Gingrich is likely to be the biggest beneficiary coming out of tonight.

* Herman Cain: Given how the night could have turned out for Cain, he and his team — such as they are — have to be happy. Cain had to answer just a single question on the sexual harassment charges against him and he did so to an audience that repeatedly made its unhappiness with the direction of the question apparent. Instead Cain spent most of the debate promoting “9-9-9” and touting himself as a “bold”outsider.

LOSERS

* Rick Perry: The 43-second-stumble that was Perry’s attempt to name the three federal agencies he would eliminate as president will go into presidential debate folklore as one one of the most awkward moments ever. It’s hard to overemphasize just how damaging this was for Perry. Moments like this have consequences for candidates. Perry’s fundraising is likely to slow (stop?) as major donors who either were on board or thinking about getting on board will take a major step back. Ditto voters who were undecided on Perry.

Hard to believe in this economy with all the substance discussed on stage all the media will talk about tomorrow is Rick Perry forgetting one agency's name. Hardly important when you have 9% unemployment. Sad to see even Drudge is on this train.

Do yourself a favor and instead of watching the Rick Perry video on Youtube watch the "Les Dowrey Show!"

A true conservative cartoon.

Episode 1: Les Dowrey Goes to Africa! Episode 2: Les Dowrey Occupies Wall Street!

I thought Cain’s performance will have more impact than they think. When the moderator asked the question...and then anpther tried to follow up, the crowd literally booed them...and they applauded and cheered Caain’s answer.

I felt he did well in other areas as well, regarding taxes, health care, social security, etc.

Given how people were wondering how he would perform, I think he put a lot of fears to rest that this might be someho a downturn for him. To the contrary, I think he is still going to climb.

I have three things to say about the debate. First, I agree that Romney and Gingrich did well tonight. Secondly, the debate was entertaining I did not change the channel for almost a full hour. Thirdly, uh um uh um uh um uh um.....

I don’t think Perry is the loser. He already lost... this gaffe does not harm him, because his detractors are already against him anyway.

Every candidate did well for themselves tonight with the exception of Perry ... though I don't think Huntsman or Santorum gained any ground. I predict Cain maintains his lead role and Gingrich gains further ground.

I always cheer Newt on during these debates when he starts ripping into the media - but tonight - he kind of got on my nerves a bit. A little bit arrogant and flippant, I didn’t like how he was stalling on giving a 30 second answer to how he would handle healthcare once Obamacare was repealed.

He took several minutes to go through this whole shpiel about how it was an idiotic question that couldn’t be answered in 30 sec - then he threw out a bunch of answers at the end. I thought he was showing off at that point, and it reminded me of why I don’t think Newt is electable - he’s a loose cannon. Kind of reminded me of the president of the Science Club that you dreaded to talk to because they always tried to show you how smart they were.

Newt likes the sound of his own voice too much. If he were elected President, he would not shut up for four years.

I thought Maria lost, rather appropriately, considering her snotty attitude and rude style

(does that make me a racist or something?)

At this point the only comment about Perry is: We’ve already got a TOTUS.

The media wanted to try this matter in the “court of public opinion”... guess they got their verdict from the audience tonight.

I agree, Cain remains the front runner in IA, SC, and FL by about five or so points over Newt and Obama-lite.

It made him look angry and uncontrollable. He needs to lighten up a bit and show a softer side.
