I always cheer Newt on during these debates when he starts ripping into the media - but tonight - he kind of got on my nerves a bit. A little bit arrogant and flippant, I didn’t like how he was stalling on giving a 30 second answer to how he would handle healthcare once Obamacare was repealed.
He took several minutes to go through this whole shpiel about how it was an idiotic question that couldn’t be answered in 30 sec - then he threw out a bunch of answers at the end. I thought he was showing off at that point, and it reminded me of why I don’t think Newt is electable - he’s a loose cannon. Kind of reminded me of the president of the Science Club that you dreaded to talk to because they always tried to show you how smart they were.
Newt likes the sound of his own voice too much. If he were elected President, he would not shut up for four years.
It made him look angry and uncontrollable. He needs to lighten up a bit and show a softer side.
You’re right, Newt needs to rein it in a little. I thought the first attack vs. Bartiromo was appropriate, but he became a bit belligerent at one point.
Still, his answers on most things were great. He would demolish Obama in a debate, particularly on healthcare.
“Kind of reminded me of the president of the Science Club that you dreaded to talk to because they always tried to show you how smart they were.”
Bingo. Newt wears his arrogance on his sleeve. He has a very high opinion of his intellect. The thing is, he is really smart, but his intellect is scattered; it’s all over the place. And he is constantly dropping word bombs, guaranteed to get the crowd going, but ever so calculated in intent. Newt is a very mixed bag, with a not so hot moral character (3 wives, 2 of whom he cheated on, etc.). Not my cup of tea.
There was no reason for him to stall, particularly on healthcare since he has very deep and specific ideas. He was right to point out the topic deserves more than just 30 or 60 seconds. That's as bad as Pelosi's we need to pass ObamaCare to find out what's in it.
Newt just spent an hour (or more) debating Cain on Medicare and Medicaid reforms on Saturday.
The questioner's leaning showed in the post show when she remarked none of the debaters had any solutions for "shovel ready" jobs.
I don't know if any of the candidates is "electable" at this point. We should just sit back and watch Obama win and Pelosi retake the House. That's where we're heading.
