Need tech help - disk copy utility
11/7/11

Posted on 11/07/2011 1:15:47 PM PST by pabianice

Have am running XP. I have two copy to disk utilities: the copy disk utility in Windows and a disk management utility called Nero.

When I use the Windows utility to try and copy photos onto a CD, it copies everything and then says, "Copy Finished. Finalizing... 5 seconds to go." And then it freezes there, not copying anything but showing the origin photos as washed-out icons. If I close it nothing is copied.

When I use Nero, similar thing. It finishes, says "Copy Complete." Fine. I then try to read the images copied to the CD and see the same washed-out icons with another message: "Images ready to copy." Once again, I can neither complete the copying nor finish runiing the utility.

After each attempt, the PC freezes, the computer list icons disappear "C", "D", "E", etc., and I have to reboot the PC to get it working again. Sometimes after I try a copy, all the icons on the desktop disappear and I have to reboot manually by shutting-off the power. After reboot I get a balloon saying, "You have images to copy." Big help.

I tried resetting the PC to an earlier date and all works until I try another copy. Then, repeats the above.

Help, please.

Scan your system with Auslogics Boostspeed trial version and repair everything before you do anything else.

Last I checked, Nero has a longstanding, known flaw with XP. (heh, I guess you know that now) I don’t know which version of XP (XP Pro or non-pro) whether that has been resolved, or not. I know I have had some odd problems trying to use it and thus I don’t and havn’t tried for quite a while.

Google “free CD burning software” and you’ll find probably a dozen or so. Go look at reviews and download one.

Express Burn, Imgburn, are two that come to mind. I liked ExpressBurn quite a bit, but I used it to rip mp3s. For photos, I use MSFT scanner and camera wizard and don’t have any issues.

Could be something wrong with your CD/DVD burner. Does it read other disks okay.

you might need to install an ASPI layer driver (operative word being might).

Try this: http://force_aspi_18.w.interia.pl/

Apologies, I kind of skipped over your report of problems using MSFT s/w to copy pix & having similar problems.

It *could* be an issue with the drive you are using as a burner, but it *also* could be something that Nero does that causes the equivalent MSFT software to burp. My reco: Go get another burner program, reboot, do NOT try either MSFT or Nero, and just try using whatever new software you end up with. If you still end up with a no-go, one has to start suspecting your drive.

Are you using a cd-rw format disk in a drive that only accepts cd-r? If your system is old, it might not accept the format of disk you are feeding it.

I use DeepBurner (freeware edition) for most of my copying to CD/DVDs.

I never had much luck with the ‘built in’ CD/DVD copy facility in XP.

My thoughts as well. Would explain the windows explorer windows freezing up and forcing the reboot. A simple copy error wouldn't tend to do that.

Take smokingfrogs advice and check to see if you can read "normal" cd's ok. If so, take a scrap cd-r and try to burn one file onto it using Windows explorer copy/paste.

Also, check to make sure your CD is compatible with your burner (i.e. cd-r, cd+r, dvd-r, dvd+r, etc).

In that case, I would suggest reinstalling the dot net framework.

CDBurnerXP uses it, and I bet Nero does too.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263

I'd uninstall what you have, and reinstall the latest version.

Click on "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Add or Remove Programs" to remove it, then download the new one and install it.

You’re running a 10 year old operating system. I suggest upgrading to Windows 7 and you’ll find that everything, including disk copy, works better.

…and when you find you have wasted yet another year screwing with the latest and greatest Microsoft has to offer you might just come to the realization that Redmond has only one OS, DOS 6.22, all else is DOS with Gloss, bloatware, trash.
You can get XP SP2 stable enough to run those apps that "require" Windows; i.e. your software vendor is too lax to port it.
