Burkini vs. bikini
altmuslimah ^ | 8 Sep | Ahmed

Bums, buttocks, tushes. Since I am on vacation at the beach it is no surprise that they are everywhere. Big ones, baby ones and ones that I covet for my very own. Yet, as different as these bottoms may be in size and shape they are almost uniformly appareled in teensy weensy bikini bottoms.

I grew up in a conservative Muslim household and would sooner order pork loin for dinner washed back with a couple of bottles of Heineken than stroll down the beach in a two piece. Even if modesty wasn’t an issue, my 40-something derriere and my belly that housed and protected three children would put a kibosh on the bikini shopping. Do some of these women not have a clue as to what their backsides look like? Do they not have a passing acquaintance with a mirror or a trusty friend who could possibly say, “No offence but, THAT is not attractive.” So, I have to assume that bikinis on the beach are akin to skis on the slopes or cleats on a field-worn without question.

But as I look – or rather attempt to look away– I wonder where is the concept of modesty among these women? As a mother of a teenage girl I wonder how other mothers are willing to send their daughters out the front door dressed in a little more fabric than found in a large handkerchief. I can only deduce that the dual concepts of shame and modesty that were so earnestly indoctrinated into me and my sister at home and all of my peers in Islamic Sunday school never made it to the masses lounging beside me poolside. Or maybe these principles were inculcated into these women but the ubiquitous nature of pop culture has obliterated these lessons from memory? A culture that believes the human body is beautiful and ought to be flaunted, deems celebrities who pose nude on magazine covers while pregnant empowered, and considers a skintight dress "hot" but a low-cut skintight dress "hotter" leads to major dress drama when trying to shop for clothes with a teenage girl.

My daughter is generally pretty easy going. Well, equal parts mellow and diva as only a teenage girl can be. But growing up in the Brittany Spears/Rihanna/Lady Gaga era has had some influence on what she deems acceptable attire. In the winter her wardrobe doesn’t cause a fuss. Stick her in a pair of jeans, a pair of Uggs and a North Face fleece and she’s happy, I am happy and her dad is very happy. In the summertime, however, the livin’ ain’t so easy. As temperatures rise so naturally do hemlines and shirt sleeves. My daughter escaped from her Islamic school and instead attends an all-girls Catholic school, and while the nuns dictate the dress code, they allow considerable leeway within the guide lines. Surprisingly enough, the nun’s idea of conservative and mine don’t mesh. Here is where FBI negotiators can drop by our home and brush up on their skills – observing the ferocious debates between my daughter and I over the exact definition of cleavage.

There’s two kinds of people in the world, people like you and people like me and Sun Tzu. He and I very strongly believe in knowing one’s enemies, in the faint hope that some are no longer enemies when they are well known, and in the more practical sense of being able to understand and predict.

Really? Just "two kinds"? You and "Sun Tzu"? Got a myopia problem? The writings attributed to someone called "Sun Tzu" are good stuff but so are Churchill, Patton and others. At least I know for sure the latter two existed.

Please re-read my post. I said "I personally don’t give a $hit what a moslem thinks about anything". And I don't give a $hit. I did not say I did not understand what they think, I do. Consider me like the fictional character Quigley as he spoke his last words to rancher Marston. I suggest you not assume things. I get islam.

If you think that following the writings and ways of "Sun Tzu" will lead to the defeat of islam I wish you good luck with that.

I concur. I believe most Americans feel this way also.

And for Sun Tsu and knowing your enemies, we do. Now crap in one hand and put your "... in the faint hope that some are no longer enemies when they are well known..." in the other and see which fills up first.

Can’t hate whatcha don’t care about, boys. If you care enough to badmouth ‘em, you care. And one of you, I forget which, believes most Americans feel your way also?

I believe most Americans voted for Obama in 2008. And I’d bet that most Americans feel Rick Perry is wrong when he sez Roosevelt’s Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. So I often don’t give a $hit what most Americans “feel”.

Feel in one hand and think in the other, see which one does you any good.

Feh ... for the nuns, teaching the girls modesty has to do with teaching them self respect.

For the mohammedans, it's not really about modesty, it's about oppression.

Not even close to the truth. A lot of voting Americans did not even vote, faced with a dismal choice and a crazy man. Who did vote? Lesbians, gays, union workers single moms, welfare recipients and uneducated college students. What kind of coalition is that? Sure, you can argue they are Americans, however there are a LOT of Americans who do not fit into the Obama coalition and they are getting pissed. The Obama coalition can swing an election, with voter fraud, given two evil candidates. Real Americans will prevail every time, when they finally wake up.

A lot of voting Americans did not even vote and thereby ceased being voting Americans.

My girlfriends and I spent alot of summers on the beach with our kids. For the first year or two I covered myself fully as my body took a hit from childbirth. After awhile though I realized “who was i trying to impress? I was surrounded by toddlers and other chubby ladies and we enjoyed getting tans while we played with out children and what did i care if someone thought my belly too big or my ass too wide?” so i bought a two piece and got a great tan! Modesty is over rated. being ashamed of your body isn’t healthy or godly.

“Most Delusional Award”?

Because of my faint hope that some who once were are no longer enemies when they become better known, or because my favorite lesbian in the whole world is Joan Jett?

And if I really did win, I smoked all those “Sarah’s gonna announce candidacy any day now” people, hayna?

Or no?

That may be the dumbest thing I have read here in awhile. It is akin to saying that because you "know" the rattlesnake it won't bite you? What do we have here? Maybe Taqiyya?

The core goal of islam is to displace that which is not islam. It is that simple. Once you "know" that you need not know much else about islam.

You must be what? 15-20 years old?

As far as "lesbians" go they can be a great deal of fun and under the right conditions a VERY great deal of fun if you know what I mean..... (wink wink)

“know” the rattlesnake it won’t bite...

“faint hope that some who once were are no longer enemies “ is not “know”. Or is it, to you? Are you one of those bull-brained idiots who’d kill every rattlesnake everywhere, and eradicate the species, just on the chance that one or two of ‘em might bite someone, someday?

you do realize that under Islam your “favorite lesbian” would be one of the first KILLED right?

For the record Islam is not a religion of peace.

Islam wants you dead.

Islam wants to rule the world.

Islam demands submission.

And!

EVERYTHING I needed to know about Islam, I learned on 9-11-01

Wish all you CAPITAL-LETTER-ABUSING brickheads could catch on that I’m not defending or welcoming Islam, I’m inviting the observation and inspection of the words of some Muslims.

That too pointy-headed intellectual of a ivory- towered goldurn academic concep’ fer y’all?
