BATF= Batcrazy Drunk Smokers With Guns—why would anybody want to create a federal agency staffed with such miserably mentally impaired dorks?

Do we know they all went to Mexico?
I thought they just let the straw purchases go through and then never bothered specifically tracking them. If the bad guys are in the US then it sort of makes sense that some would get used in the US.
A bad policy wherever the guns went.

BO told his supporters he is working “under the radar” for gun control. The strategy apparently is that the ATF is giving guns to criminals to put gun shops out of business. Hey, with this insane bunch, anything is possible.

"Imagine this had happened under a Republican administration." Name a Republican president who would have been stupid enough to dream up this scheme. Admittedly, I wouldn't put it past Nixon to engage in some sort of intrigue to undermine and embarass his political opponents, but IMHO, I think even he would have drawn the line when it came to endangering innocent American lives.

Of course you are right, but that is entirely beside my (I thought OBVIOUS) point, which is that the media is silent on this.

Your point was obvious. I was merely pointing out that the disparity is more wide ranging than just the media coverage.

Can't watch the video here at work but I'm assuming it's about Nixon's ramping up of the WOD, which certainly has endangered innocents, and has led to one Constitutional usurpation after another. I'll not contest that.
Having said that, that was all pretty much out in the open, with the open approval of many Americans, not some behind-the-scenes subterfuge a la Gunrunner.

I think that the two are very much related in their philosophy: government as the arbiter of what is right and wrong, and as such [by definition] can never be wrong.

The two are not entirely dissimilar, and both are bad governance; I've never said otherwise, but the WOD has largely been conducted with the complicity of the American people (who are now reaping the whirlwind.) Rather than being hidden and under the radar like Gunrunner, much of the WOD has been trumpeted by pols as a noble endeavor.
Of course that makes neither right or proper, but it can't be denied that it's a pretty basic difference...especially when one considers the irony that one administration was skewered for its 'coverups' and the other has boasted of its 'transparency.'
