Splashy Sarah Palin Movie Premiere Shuts Out Hollywood; Turns Away Journalists
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | June 27, 2011 | Paul Bond

Posted on 06/27/2011 10:34:37 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The director admits he didn't invite his "right-wing" friends such as Jon Voight and Dennis Miller, while the media scrambles for seats.

PELLA, IOWA -- Reporters from around the country that have descended upon tiny Pella, Iowa for the premiere of the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated on Tuesday night were in for a rude awakening: So scarce are the tickets that there’s no room in the theater for journalists.

The town, in fact, has been filling up rapidly since Palin confirmed she’d attend the premiere with her husband, Todd. Police notified residents that the streets around the venue, the 111-year-old Pella Opera House, would be shut down beginning 13 hours prior to show time.

On Monday, organizers were still divvying up tickets to the massively oversubscribed event, and reporters – some who travelled more than 1,000 miles -- were given the word that they didn’t make the cut.

Organizers were scrambling Monday, though, trying to arrange a separate screening for journalists, but there were no guarantees given.

The Undefeated, from writer-director Steve Bannon, is one of two documentaries about the controversial former vice presidential candidate. The other – a less flattering look at Palin -- is an untitled film from Nick Broomfield that is seeking a distributor.

Bannon has opted for a low-key premiere – “the hard, worn bricks of the Pella Opera House is all the red carpet I need,” he said Monday – though road closures and media trucks have dictated otherwise. Bannon, a U.S. Navy veteran, also enlisted some retired Navy SEALs for security detail.

Most of the 340 tickets went to Iowans and some of the commentators featured in the film, like Tammy Bruce and Sonnie Johnson. The most controversial cast member – not including Palin herself – is Andrew Breitbart, who is expected to be a last-minute arrival on Tuesday.

“I didn’t invite all my right-wing Hollywood friends,” Bannon said. “Jon Voight, Dennis Miller, I’ll have a screening for those guys later. I’d actually like them to buy a ticket, but they’re so tight… And you can quote me on that,” he joked.”

Pella is a religiously and politically conservative town of 10,000 people that boasts three dozen churches. With those sensibilities in mind, and because the Palins will be in the audience, Bannon and company will screen the version of the film with the less offensive opening.

The Undefeated begins with celebrities – David Letterman, Matt Damon, Howard Stern, Madonna, Louis C.K. and others – thoroughly trashing Palin, though Tuesday’s audience will be treated to bleeps instead of the more hardcore profanity used by some of the entertainers. Either way, it’s an intense opening made all the more menacing by the choice of music and the inclusion of a Bible verse.

The premiere includes a barbecue for 1,000 guests – no media – where Palin intends on mingling, though it wasn’t determined yet whether she’d make any public remarks.

Singularly excellent.

I propose a variation on your #2:

>>The second theory of motivation is inherently cynical, therefore more suitable to her detractors, that contrary to the pattern of her previous life, she has devolved into just another pretty narcissist looking for the spotlight and not capable of thinking past such short term goals as tweaking the media and maximizing her financial status, even if it means leading literally millions of supporters into a false hope that she has the capacity for loftier aims.<<

I am not sure Gov. Palin has fallen deep into the trap of cynicism. I think she may have been ensnared by the “she Bear” syndrome which she has been both accused and honored for. The MSM went after her family. When it was just her, she would have been just cold and calculating. When they went after her husband, her daughter and then her granddaughter, I think something might have ticked over in Gov. Palin’s mind. Something that said “in the end you will pay.”

That may sound trivial and vain, but it also is too human.

To extend your analysis: why would Gov. Palin allow her supporters (and based on the attacks on me on this and other threads, I would not be too far afield to use the term “rabid”) to twist in the wind? Mos of the GOP candidates have declared, one way or the other.

My alternative answer is she doesn’t care about them and this is about her extracting her pound of flesh, supporters be damned.

I invert nothing — look at the plain text before all of us: Gov. Palin won’t run but she is enjoying her revenge on the MSM too much to let anyone — MSM, detractors, supporters — off the hook.

But your analysis is reasoned and I appreciate the thoughts you provide for consideration.

>>.WHO MADE, CHOSE THE TOWN, CHOSE THE VENUE FOR THE SHOWING, AND IS MAKING MONEY FROM THIS FILM? <<

I ask you the same question: her or her handlers? Is she just a puppet or does Gov. Palin make her own decisions?

That question seems to make you queasy.

>>How many times and by how many posters, do you have to be told that Governor Palin did NOT chose Pella?<<

I apologize, I missed your post completely!

So, we now know that Gov. pain does NOT make her own decisions but is in the hands of her puppeteers/hadnlers/producers/grips/whatever.

Me? If I was the point of a 100% political (and finally truth-telling opportunity) film, I would guide how it would be released. I guess Gov. Palin was too weak to provide such guidance.

I defer to your point — it wasn’t her decision at all. She is just a bystander.

The Palins have five children ( 2 sons, 3 daughters, and one grandson, not a granddaughter......all of whom have been excoriated and vilified by the MSM, both Dem and GOPer punditry, and elites ), yet she hasn't ever, not once, struck back, as you are suggesting she is doing now.

Your puppet line is both illogical and despicable.

I'm still waiting for your answers to my queries; don't let me down, I could use another good laugh.

The answer makes you not just queasy, but incapable of acceptance of the facts!

Since you don't even know that there is no granddaughter, have been repeatedly told just WHO is running this show ( which is also in the article ), but are still ignoring it all, I guess I'll just repeat it all for you, one last time.

The gentleman who has made this film, all on his own, without payment or suggestion from the Palins, who did a similar documentary on Ronald Reagan, is Stephan Bannon. He is in now way a "Palin handler", a "puppeteer", nor taking commands, or even suggestions from any of the Palins!

This documentary was all Bannon's idea. He made it, produced it, chose the town, the date of the premiere, and the venue.

To keep rejecting the facts of the matter discredits you.

>>You are becoming the model Palin concern troll<<

God I LOVE the term “concern troll” — it has that beautiful combination of the je ne sais quoi of something of significance while not actually saying anything, yet it seems so accusatory with no argumentation.

I especially like the “the sword of RINO-dom strapped to his waist and the shield of victimhood on his left arm” re-packaged claim against anyone who dares identify problems in Gov. Palin’s actions or statements.

(~Gov Palin)=(RINO).

The math is pure, within a certain set domain — I use parenthetical conventions to help the watchers who may have difficulty following - it is for all I must assist. Should the entire geometric proof be needed, I can provide it tomorrow. Please have your log tables and your vector math handy, it will be a bit tough. Also, be ready to define the difference between a set query and inquiry. I will provide a construct against which you may apply your political calculus.

In he meantime, well played, sir. I am indeed slapped by the paint-ball when I wasn’t watching. But it is very late and I must work to pay taxes that so many of you clearly depend upon if you can attack me so late at night.

I bid you good morrow.

Grand SON Tripp — I stand corrected. A typo. You win a point. Please collect it on the way out of the arcade. I think it gets you a box of Chiclets.

>>This documentary was all Bannon’s idea. He made it, produced it, chose the town, the date of the premiere, and the venue.<<

She caved, fine. If she can’t control a simple film release with her as the point, what can she control?

You can attempt to twist things, in order to make Governor Palin ( not pain, as you posted ) look bad; however, the subject of an INDEPENDENT documentary film, which this is, has no control and no say-so in any part of it.

This one, THE UNDEFEATED, is a favorable take on her. There is another documentary, out there, being pushed, but which, thus far, can find no distributor, which is 100% anti-Pain. Are you going to claim that Governor Palin and/or any of her family and friends have an input and say-so in that film ?

You're a nobody. Nobody will ever do a film/documentary about you. You have less than no idea how such things work, yet are more than comfortable in claiming that you would do thus and so and that therefore Sarah Palin would/should do likewise.

It would be behoove you to only discuss those things which you have knowledge of. That way, none of us would know just how ignorant and foolishly arrogant you are.

This entire threads is fights about what freedumb is saying.

I think this tiny town will love this. I think it’s great that the media aren’t getting to see it. I think that if this comes off as a huge event it’s a big plus for Palin.

I don’t see how this is bad at all.

I’d argue that she probably approved this. May have come up with this. Don’t see any problems here.

Ever hear of “self-employed,” “disabled,” “retired,” “telecommuters,” “stay-at-home parents,” “virtual workers,” or night owls, Mr. High-and-Mighty taxpayer? As for myself, I'm a disabled veteran who does what he can from home to help my spouse who had a stroke last year and also is starting a home-based business which involves the telephone and Internet (that's that thing we're conversing on) and I love how you just painted dozens if not hundreds of FReepers with the broad brush of lassitude and parasitism, with you as the righteous producer who lifts all our leaky boats. Thank you, bwana!!

>>You can attempt to twist things, in order to make Governor Palin ( not pain, as you posted ) <<

Also a typo. I try to always refer to Gov. Palin as exactly that.

I find your attempt to say “no one will make a film about me” humorous and a bit desperate when you are seeing you are losing the argument. No one will make a film about you either. Chances are no one will make a film about my next door neighbor or my great aunt Bernice. Or your uncle Bernice.

This is what we educated call “Reductio ad absurdum” — the final stop when all else fails.

I thank you for parking your end argument there. It makes it easier to call it a night.

Sleep well, oh Reverse PDS’ite. And sleep on the thought she will never meet you, will never know you and will just smile at you as just another number (which won’t be of meaning since she won’t run).

But you can certainly cuddle yourself in your arms and say “she smiled at me! She WANTS me!” and that will get you to sleep. And I hope that works for you.

What do you do for a living?

Have you ever been the subject of a film?

Do you know anyone in the industry?

Have you even investigated the ins and outs of that business?

The answer to all of the above is clearly no.

Even major stars, of the past and today's, have absolutely no control of when or where a premiere is to be, unless that is in their contract ( which it never is ), or if they, themselves have written, produced, directed, and are the DISTRIBUTOR of said film.

Governor Palin agreed to allow Bannon to use one of her books and part of her life as the basis for his film. Once she signed that contract, everything else was taken out of her hands. Did she get paid anything for the use of her book? I would assume so, as that is a logical business assumption for me to make. Elsewise, should he have used her book without her acceptance, that would be theft. Had Bannon only used speeches she had made in public, he wouldn't have needed her permission.

She didn't "cave" and Bannon is neither her "handler" nor "puppeteer". You have yet to make an argument of any kind, have failed miserably to refute the facts, and are completely out of your depth.

If I can help with your home-based Internet business let Freep mail me. Seriously. This thread nor any other won’t get in the way of helping a fellow FReeper.

My “taxes” comment was that it is really late and I have to sleep. I am pretty sure most FReepers paid their dues in their time. But I have been accused of “chickening” out and just preempted it.

"So, we now know that Gov. pain does NOT make her own decisions but is in the hands of her puppeteers/hadnlers/producers/grips/whatever."

Your continued willful negligence of just about every fact of the article/venture, its sequence, dictates of circumstances, and (many) event logistics--as planned and rolled out by the film's creator--is showing your stance about it all as small-mindedly flippant and kind of shoulder-chip bitter.

"I guess Gov. Palin was too weak to provide such guidance. I defer to your point — it wasn’t her decision at all. She is just a bystander."

Your hyperbole and crass categorizing of every little aspect of Sarah is just plain angry.

why ignore facts in favor of self-fulfilling fancy? Why bother?

“Big event, small town, MSM churlishly ex-vited.”

That’s how you portray it and how the media will as well. You are on the side of Chris Matthews, Olbermann and the rest. That’s fine, you guys can have each other. Who the heck is saying she’s not human?

You don't know me; but then, neither do you know mush of anything about the Palins.

Though it is extremely unlikely that anyone would ever make a film or a documentary about you, the reverse isn't true about me and/or some members of my family and/or the people I have known/know.

Though I don't have an "uncle Bernice" and refuse to talk about my family and friends on threads, the likelyhood of my being in such a film are far higher than you guess, since I have already been in one. No, not THE UNDEFEATED; a different one.

You aren't "educated" at all. You may be able to through out a couple of Latin words, but hey, so can many of us and I can type Vigil's THE AENEID, in Latin, in its entirety, from memory. That doesn't prove that I am "educated" either; or, perchance it does. LOL
