TSA takes toy away from mentally challenged man
By Howard Portnoy, Libertarian Examiner June 10, 2011 10:43 am ET
We can all sleep easier tonight knowing that Drew Mandys plastic toy hammer is in the trash rather than terrorizing passengers and crew on the plane he and his parents boarded for Walt Disney World.
If youre looking for someone to thank for depriving a mentally challenged 29-year-old of his much-beloved security blanket, look no further than the Transportation and Security Administration.
Members of this feckless bunch sprung into action at Detroit Metro Airport when they first laid eyes on Mandy, whose parents say has the mental capacity of a 2-year-old. They singled him out for a special pat-down, which makes perverse sense of a sort: Special pat-downs for people with special needs.

Will someone in congress with a shred of decency left to their name PLEASE end this stupidity once and for all?
This is beyond evil. Anyone who has ever been around the mentally retarded knows that a toy like that can be their entire world.
DHS is a punishment from God.
It sounds to me like the mentally retarded ones are those that took the hammer.
Yup. And what threat to national security requires the TSA to search an obviously mentally retarded man?
Unfreakingreal.
The TSA should know that the terrorists would never place a bomb on a mentally challenged person.
that is truly disgusting. I dont recognize my own country anymore.
TSA Detroit Metro Airport...making this Michigan man proud!
Sheesh. I wish someone would plastic hammer the f#$% out of the genius who made the call on this one.
I fly through Detroit Metro pretty much every time I travel. In fairness, I don’t recall ever feeling mistreated by TSA there (other than the general inconvenience of the whole process). Maybe I’ve just been lucky.
The TSA Agents were just jealous that the toy belonged to someone else. If they could not have it, no one could have it.
Surely even the TSA could verify that the plastic hammer was not going to explode.
The search was justified.
The confiscation was dumb.
Exactly, this is disgusting, and beyond stupid. My daughter is about 5 years old mentally. This would be highly upsetting to her and trying to explain why someone would do this would be near impossible for her to understand. My daughter loves rubbery things, the texture and feel of it. Like balloons and such. Once when she was getting her blood drawn she wanted to keep that rubber band they put on your arm. The tech wanted it back, he was young and learned a very hard lesson that day. They played tug of war for a few seconds and he said, let go, she did and he got snapped right in the face. One can only dream that would happen to one of those TSA agents trying to pull something like that on her ;)
LOL...I look at that pic and the first thought that dawns on me is that their combined weight exceeds their combined IQ by an order of hundreds.
He’s breaking his own law.
