For all these years we've been told it's "Osama," like he's part Irish. Now I've been seeing Fox News (and other news sources I'm sure) using "Usama." I've had a friend on Facebook ask me what the proper spelling is. Apparently it's both, so I devised a way to help people figure out which version should be used.
I call this piece "The Ubama Bunch."
I went to Wikipedia just this morning to see how old he was (born 1957), and there was a paragraph about all the many spellings......turns out “Osama” is the preferred among mohammedans.
I’m sure that Obama would rather that it be spelled “Usama.” The media who push that spelling are probably trying to do Obama a favor.
My wife and I noticed it too...clearly they did this to “protect” Obama from being confused with Osama.
To me this just proves what an awful candidate the GOP put up against Obama. On name alone we should have been able to beat Obama. In an election year that we are in a war against terror and it’s leader is Osama Bin Ladin and another war where the leader is Saddam Huesin...we go and vote in Barrack Hussein Obama.
Come on...that alone should have turned off the American public. McCain was that bad of a candidate.
Good to know. So you’re saying we should use Usama then?
:-)
There is no standard transliteration rules from Arabic to Roman alphabets. English, French, German, Dutch, and likely more have their own conventions and aren’t necessarily consistent within themselves.
I believe it is currently ‘Flotsama’.

LOL...
For those who want the answer, technically both are correct because Arabic doesn’t use the same alphabet. If you want to be “by the book”, the academic spelling is Usama because there is no equivalent to “O” in Arabic. However, with most Arabic words translated, phonetic spellings are correct. It is the same issue with the spelling of Koran/Qu’ran.
Yes, and we’re going to do it again in 2012.
“Osama vs Usama, How Do You Spell It?”
D E D
A lot of people have noticed that Osama is now Usama. I have had a few people ask me about that. I think that the Obama Admin suggested to the media that they use Usama instead of Osama so it doesn’t sound like Obama.
What about Ubama. He has done more damage to our nation then any out sider could ever do.
The lapdog media suddenly started spelling it with a ‘U’ to prevent accidentally saying Osama instead of Obama.
Didn’t help much. Plenty of newscasters said Osama when they meant Obama. LOL
I prefer Ubama.
Exactly as it’s too close to his name.
