I'm an aspiring guitarist. I like some of Led Zeppelin's music. But Jimmy Page was reputed to have ties with witchcraft and satanism.
Do you see a conflict between Christianity and learning some of their instrumental guitar riffs?
Like, Stairway to Heaven. I kind of got around the question since it's actually "Taurus" by Spirit. But there are other guitar riffs I really like but am bothered by Page's influences.
I don’t think playing led zepelin music would be akin to worshipping satan.
I’m a Christian and I work with a lot of Christian musicians in a variety of roles and situations. I personally don’t see any problem with this; it doesn’t bother me even a little bit. That said, if it bothers you, feel free to steer clear.
The Bible says to abstain from all appearance of evil. You may not be worshiping Satan, but why glorify the music of someone who was? Lucifer was the chief musician in Heaven. His music was part of what caused his pride and downfall. All things are lawful, but not all things are expedient. The melody may be pretty, but the roots are bad and my advice would be to stay away from it.
What the music industry doesn’t want you to know!!!!!!!!!

I listened and had CD’s of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax and Cannibal Corpse, My Dying Bride, Danzig..and I still attend Sunday service and active in my liberal parish activities. It never necc. meant that I would sacrifice virgins and drink their blood. That would be the activities of the Obama voter.
Sheesh...I’d be doomed...
There are plenty of hard rockin christian metal bands...
I would suggest that you play for the Lord, whatever you play. My ipod is filled with Christian podcasts, my favorite Christian songs, and I have most everything Lead Zep put out.
Black Sabbath OTOH... ;)
Interesting note: Led Zeppelin created their distinctive sound after spending a lot of time in the Middle East and picking up on Arab and muslim tonalities.
I was surprised to see two 8-track tapes (the 70's like I said) that astonished me. One was "Bare Trees" by Fleetwood Mac and in the player was Sgt. Pepper from the Beatles. I'm admittedly a square and was so naive that I thought the only music a Southern Gospel group would listen to would be others in that genre. Those 8-tracks may have been the bus driver's but I was still surprised to see them on the touring bus.
Your musical ability is a gift from God. So is Jimmy Pages’ ability. Satan does not create anything; he merely attempts to attach himself to God’s gifts and degrade them and the people God gives them to.
Jimmy Page’s ability as a guitarist is part of the Imago Dei. All of us are created in the image of the creator God. A gracious God gave Jimmy the gift. Romans 11:29. “...for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” You got the gift and the call.
Rejoice in the Giver of the gift and play the music.
Led Zepplin, greatest ROCK band of all time.
I never heard that Jimmie Page was a satanist and I just checked with hubby and he never heard that either.
Of course there is the eternal question of art/artist how can we take one without the other.
But, in this case I think that is a moot question.
I don’t know that I can cite anything particularly “uplifting” about Led Zep (certainly nothing that come to mind straight away) but there is nothing particularly bad about them either.
So, you know, ROCK ON!
yngwie malmsteen...seriously....

For what my opinion is worth, the music itself should be fine, so just concern yourself with any objectionable lyrics.
If it’s about the music, no worries.
If it’s about the underlying message in the lyrics... you may have an issue.
Trust yourself and you’ll be fine. Remember, Pat Boone made an album doing covers of heavy metal songs.
A note is a note, a chord is a chord. It’s what YOU put into them that matters, not what some holier than thou types want you to believe.
Years of Heavy Metal, Trance and Electronic music, some of it very unchristian (lyrically speaking) never made a dent in what I believe, nor should it to you.
Think of it this way...the same dudes that sang/played some of the best gospel music ever recorded were themselves drugged up/drunks when they made music that inspired many Christians with their beauty. (Cash and Presley). Should we not listen to these works because the musicians were not perfect?
Only you can decide that for yourself.
Lou...I’d be considered pretty conservative in my choice of music, but I have to tell you that though I have never enjoyed rocker music at all...’Stairway to Heaven’ has been put to every musical instrument out there which has included popular orchestras and solo accustic guitar.
The musical arrangement is on par with some of the best classical pieces out there... and I think the music industry understands clearly this is so as is evidenced by the many who have included it in their presentations....additionally not uncommon it is used in colleges for the arts as a study piece.
I’m basing this piece on the fact of it’s musical arrangement and orchestration. Really a superb piece.
The acutual words of the music are just plain weird to me...and I don’t care for them at all.
He was...sort of. Page was heavily into Aliester Crowley at one time. Like many in the 60s, he ‘was looking for something, man’ and ultimately didn’t find it there. His black ‘dragon’ stage clothes are covered in ‘mystical’ symbols.
He doesn’t do that deal anymore.
Might wanna rethink at least ‘some of that ;)

After Forever - Master of Reality album
Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you’re dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is He a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?
When you think about death do you lose your breath
Or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope
Do you think he’s a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I’ve seen the light
And I’ve changed my ways
And I’ll be prepared when you’re lonely and scared
At the end of our days
Could it be you’re afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
That God is the only way to love
Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?
I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don’t believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can’t retrieve
Perhaps you’ll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he’s the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear?
Yes! I think it’s too late.
