This has been bugging me for a long time. I have never been in the military and, hence, do not know how to salute. But something about his salute makes me crazy.
Is this photo today from Obama's arrive seem to be the way to salute?

His salute is like a limp, halfhearted handshake. You just know the recipents of it aren’t held in high regard.
Looks more like he’s wiping the side of his head than saluting. But at least it isn’t his patented, childish middle finger salute.
we need to call in some military freepers ....
I always liked the Roman one, or at least the way they show it in the movies where they slam their fist over the heart.
I have no idea if that is really the way the Romans did it.
Go easy on the guy! He's trying to break the habit of saluting like this!
The elbow should be out more BunnyHoney, but that’s pretty minor. I think the problem is that it’s just jarring to see a hand in salute position touching that face.
It seems like his elbow is way lower than the other two. He doesn’t raise his elbow.
I know this is a problem for presidents ... but I can always find another reason to detest The One.
no offense, but this is a non issue. If I had to salute every damn time I walk through a door, I get tired as well
Note the Marine to your right. His upper arm is parallel to the ground. Granted that is more of a parade salute, those of us who salute a million times a day tend the have our elbows halfway between the POTUS's and the Marine's.
At my last Navy reunion we were told the rules on saluting had changed. We could now salute while not in uniform. In days of yore we didn't salute unless we were in uniform. Life was simpler in days of yore.
Give him a break. He's not even an American. I'm suprised he doesn't salute palm out like the brits and the frogs.

Pretty sloppy, but I don’t think he cares. After all, he won.

That’s the John Kerry salute, who served in Vietnam.
I kind of miss there being rules for things, I admit. At least you had a clue what you were supposed to do, even if they were sometimes annoying.
The upper arm should be at a right angle to the body, and parallel to the ground... the forearm should be at a 45 degree angle extending to a straight, uncupped hand with the thumb tightly in and flat against the side of the hand. The tip of the middle finger should touch the edge of your cover, or your right eyebrow if you’re uncovered.
Obama’s salute features a cupped hand, and a lazy, improperly positioned elbow. Looks sloppy and careless
