The five Republican state senators who have been negotiating with Californias Democratic Governor Jerry Brown have thrown in the towel, declaring that the talks have reached an impasse. In a letter from the five to the governor that was released today, the senators said that Brown had engaged them in talks in a serious manner, but that it was clear he was unable to get what they called other stakeholders to agree to reforms necessary to create jobs, require responsible state spending, eliminate abusive pension practices, and implement meaningful governmental reforms. The state faces a shortfall of over $25 billion, and Brown, in his second stint in the governors office, is proposing a combination of budget cuts and tax increases and tax extensions to close the gap.

“...it was clear he was unable to get what they called other stakeholders to agree to reforms...”
Stakeholders = Unions
This is actually good. Sorry, but most state governments-—and the feds-—need to be brought to the edge of the abyss and made to look in.
At the state level, there seem to be a lot of Republicans who are willing to play some hardball. I am not yet convinced that the US congress will do the same, but perhaps popular support for the state-level politicians will “encourage the others” at the federal level.
They were being polite.
Politicians (at least of the R persuasion) seem to lose spine as they move up the food chain.
remember sebelius now has a law which gives her an unlimited tap into the treasury to fund california “medical needs”
I would LMAO at this, but I think we’re going to suffer as a nation when Mexifornia implodes.
My home State is going down. The cause of the problems in this State are Leftists be they Democrats, or RINO’s. Same as the Nation overall.
Jerry Brown is typical of the reason, and cause of most of why we are going down due his first two terms as Governor.
I hardly expected any direction to come from these “talks” with Jerry Brown whose sole direction is, and always has been to divert blame onto others, or other things in effort to dodge any responsibility whatsoever, and claim the kudo’s when he succeeds in BS’ing his way through something.
Anyone can call him “Governor Moonbeam” if they wish, I will always call him “Governor Bullshit”.
Why the excerpt Joe? It’s your column; were you planning on suing yourself for copyright violations or were you just short of hits today??
Just askin’...
his opposing candidate would have probably done a better job.
yes, most of the 50 states are broke....
Just for info
California has a Dem majority, but state law requires a 2/3 vote for taxes.
Do I even need to add the < /sarc tag?
Examiner policy. Last time I tried to post my Examiner column, I got an error message from FR stating that the column had to be excerpted.
I believe the Dems are 2 votes short of the 2/3 they need, so they need R buy-in. Besides, it’s a good CYA when things go south, as they will.
Brown’s policies are a major reason for the collapse of California: he signed into law the bill that allowed unions collective bargaining rights with the state. His chickens have now come home to roost.
Deep down inside, I know eventually the Fed Gov is going to allow Cali, Ill, and NY to issue bonds with a Federal guarantee.
In that case, would the last one to leave please turn out the lights?
