On the Monday morning after the Super Bowl, where, at the White House party the big game bill of fare was apparently fit for a (fat) king, Michelle Obama announced an initiative to persuade (cajole?) restaurants into serving smaller portions. I'm sorry, but even though I might agree restaurant portions are a bit large, from what platform of expertise or authority does this person speak? The last time I checked, she was a lawyer, unelected to political office. She probably has more credibility in the area of mesothelioma. Why does she think we care or revere her opinion on food portions?
This is the problem with liberals. They think they know what is best for all of us - after all, like late-stage teenagers, they are experts on everything. They further think we will listen and heed their "wise counsel." They have no clue that half the country's resentment of them is because of this very perspective. We really do not care what they think and absolutely resent it when they try to impose their narrow views on the rest of us, either by pronouncement or fiat.
Take toilets and light bulbs, for instance. All new toilets are federally mandated to be of the "low flow" specification. In some communities, you cannot even sell an existing home until you replace your old water guzzlers with these new models. When did this become the government's business? By the very admission, through law, that they have to mandate these, it proves they do not make economic sense (for if they did, we would all go out and buy them pronto).
Likewise with the screwy little fluorescent bulbs the government has mandated we buy starting in the near future. They are inferior (it takes three minutes for the lights in my kitchen to come to full power when equipped with these silly things) and they are foreign. We have given up perfectly serviceable incandescent bulbs made in the good old USA for these quasi-DNA /Chihuly shapes made in China.
Conservatives need to understand one cannot give into the least innocuous of the liberals' ideas. Doing so, in the name of looking fair and reasonable, only serves to encourage them.
The next thing you know, they are mandating health care insurance premiums. And with the health care insurance premiums mandate, should that stand, we will be forced to buy all sorts of other silly things from the government in the future. It will be a precedent without precedence.
Of course, stealthily, we are already being forced to buy government services now. Take the TSA, which operates security at most airports. Until recently, the head of the TSA was willing to let airports, proving they could meet the TSA's security standards, provide their own security screening. Recently, this program was stopped without explanation when the Branson, Missouri airport asked to go their own way with screening. In almost the next breath, the TSA said they will be allowing unions a bigger say in representing TSA employees (what a surprise). Simply, if you choose to fly, you are forced to buy security services from the government, which are hidden in your ticket price
Liberals incorrectly think they are all wise, all knowing and that the rest of us will blithely follow their wonderful ideas.
The truth is, they are no wiser than the rest of us, nor do they impart in any way an esprit de corps which the rest of us are in the least bit interested. It is time we stop coddling them just because we are worried we will look unreasonable. Opposing ridiculous ideas should never be unreasonable and is a stance we should be proud to uphold.
Like Austin Powers said, "It's all about freedom, baby" - and that still doesn't make you my mother.
Have you ever gone with an elderly couple to a diner? They buy one plate, and share.
Michelle needs to keep her hands off their dinner.
I already knew that Jim Thompson was not my mother.
If I wanted a fatter ass, or where to get boob belts, I’d ask Michelle.
Anything else, forget it.
If they do buy two plates...They take most of it home and eat for two more days.
They are simply control freaks.
Yes, the portions are too big. Restaurants cannot survive selling small portions at small prices. Consumers wont buy small portions at high prices, except those with more money than sense. Restaurants are struggling now in this poor economy. This crap is the last thing they need.
That's why I take home what I didn't eat & have delicious leftovers the next day. I get 2 meals for the price of one. Most restaurants are happy & prepared to give you a to-go box. No customer is forced to clean their plate or waste food while at the restaurant.
This is a non-problem with a nanny state solution. It has no more merit than flying pigs.
How did I know that Michelle Obama would be an empty shell of a First Lady, tilting at windmills & screaming “the sky is falling”? Laura Bush had more substance in her little toenail. The solution to obesity lies in the parks & playing fields, not the restaurants. But hey, it's hard to promote exercise with big hips in a designer dress & heels.
