If White House Was Surprised by Applause at Tucson Pep Rally… Why Did They Ask For It On Jumbotron?

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that they were surprised by the applause at the memorial pep rally on Wednesday for the victims of the Tucson shootings.
"I will say that I read the speech several times and thought that there wouldnt be a lot of applause if any. I think many of us thought that. But I think there was a celebration, again, of the lives of those who had been impacted. Not just at that grocery store but throughout the country. And I think that, if that is part of the healing process, then thats a good thing."
Oh really?
Then why was it printed on the Jumbotron? (pic at link)

Where was the “Leadership” from this President? There was none because he is not one. All he had to do at the first applause was to hold a hand up and say, “please”

Several professional speechwriters have already asked why were applause lines written in the speech?
I think that's pretty standard. It lets the speech reader know where applause is likely, so that they can pause, and not have their next line interupted. No big deal. That being said though, Robert Gibbs is still a liar by stating that they didn't expect applause. The "applause" lines written into the speech for my above stated reason is proof that they did in fact expect applause.

The whole thing stinks. Hussein is a creep and half the country likes it.

Of course, but GWB speech after the V.Tech shootings was an example of speechwritng apropos for the occasion.
This was a campaign style speech.

You have to understand the President is not a whiteman and sometimes just doesnt know how to act You mean, since he's half white he doesn't know how to act half the time? You can then draw your own conclusion. (...but NOT the Irish!)

The part I watched had cheering and clapping throughout it, not just in response to certain lines. Is there a single Zer0 quote worthy of remembering?

The line that tickled me most in the comment section was
“Obamas new book should be entitled:

The proof that this disgrace of a memorial service failed is that people are discussing boos, applauses and t-shirts. Had Obama been a true leader and lead a respectful memorial service the discussion we would be having is about the VICTIMS and the beautiful service that was given. Possibly represented with poems, songs, individual eulogies, tribute to our American Flag, etc. This man is so unfit for the Office, it is bordering on insanity.

Closed caption or crowd motivation. It makes no difference. The effect is identical. If O did not want applause it would not have been shown on the tron.
Slice it any way you choose. Baottom line is a sleazy production for no purpose other than to lift O’s numbers.

That line of reasoning doesn't put the right in a very good light, quite frankly. Closed captioning is hardly a call for applause. We need to stick with realistic critiques of the rally, of which there are plenty.

If the closed caption called for applause, as it appears it did...... where do you think the script came from? The WH, that is where.
To: Para-Ord.45
If we are going to criticize him for what is obviously closed-captioning, we'll look awfully damned silly and deserve whatever flames we get. Save the criticism for something serious -- there's plenty enough of that.
And I'm surprised Gateway pundit was so foolish in jumping on this.
