After Tragedy, An Open Letter To Parents From Michelle Obama
NPR ^ | Jan 13th 2011 | Michelle Obama/Eyder Peralta

In an open letter just sent by the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama exhorts parents to use the Tucson tragedy as a teachable moment. It's a moment, she writes, for valuable lessons, "about the character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away."

Here's the full text of the letter.

Dear parents,

Like so many Americans all across the country, Barack and I were shocked and heartbroken by the horrific act of violence committed in Arizona this past weekend. Yesterday, we had the chance to attend a memorial service and meet with some of the f

We can explain to them that although we might not always agree with those who represent us, anyone who enters public life does so because they love their country and want to serve it.

OMFG

Why is this woman always trying to tell me how to raise my kids? Will she accept my advice on how to raise hers?

Yes, that is the defining characteristic of politicans—their deep desire to “serve.”

Sure, if she means in the same context as the Twilight Zone episode, “To Serve Man” . . .

I hope your advice would be to take them away from and out of the White House and back to Chicago. Oh and, Michelle, drag your hubby along too!

Well put. Glenn Reynolds has a link up on Instapundit right now to the great H.L. Mencken quote that seems about right here - “The urge to save humanity is almost always a false-front for the urge to rule it.”

The outright mendacity of the Obamas blows my mind.

NONE of what she is talking about had to do with why this happened. I agree that if your child asks what she can do for these people who suffered a loss, Michelle is right: PRAY, send a little letter or note. Let them know you care, from miles away.

But if the children ask how this could have happened, it has NOTHING to do with whether or not you agree with your representative. The shooter did not like the way his Rep answered a psychotic-induced question three years ago, and held a grudge out of INSANITY.

So if the children ask, tell them that this could have been prevented if all the many people who knew this boy was sick mentally had insisted he get taken in for a 72-hour evaluation, in which he would have received a diagnosis and possibly medication and help. It could have been prevented if his parents had kept weapons away from him, etc. He may have fallen through the cracks if people DID try to get him evaluated but no one would evaluate him against his will because of his “civil rights.” But he didn’t even fall through the cracks if NO ONE tried to get him help.

There is a problem with our mental health system. Some American adults are so ill mentally that to let them have “freedom” is not doing that. It’s like putting your 4-year-old out on the streets. It wouldn’t be safe, for her or the world. This is how life is for our mentally ill. They NEED the help that being kindly supervised 24/7 would bring, because they don’t have the ability to decide for themselves. They are getting input that isn’t there, hallucinations, so they are not able to make decisions.

No one wants a cuckoo’s nest scenario, but there are too many mentally ill who are “free” and living unhappy, unsafe lives. Some of these people will harm others.

It’s a problem. Too bad Michelle didn’t deal with that. It could have taught her daughters something important about why this REALLY happened. It wasn’t politics or disagreement.

Nobody could cut to the quick like Mencken.
