Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to sue a suburban Chicago school district for denying a Muslim middle school female teacher three weeks of unpaid leave to abandon her students and make a pilgrimage to Mecca. The teacher wanted to perform the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia which every adult Muslim is supposed to make at least once in a lifetime if he or she is able to do so. Ironically, the Obama administration is suing over a practice that discriminates against women. Under Islamic law, a woman is not allowed to perform Hajj alone and must be accompanied by an adult Muslim Mahram (father, husband, son or brother etc.). And for an administration that claims it regards a quality education for our public school students to be one of its highest priorities, it is willing to fight for the “right” of a Muslim teacher to abandon the students in her charge so that she can trek to Mecca for a few weeks.

Unless I missed it, this article (and another I read recently) don’t state whether the school system allows leave of this length for other things. If they do, this lawsuit has merit. If they do not, then it should be tossed out like yesterday’s newspaper.

Leaving this guy in place for two more years is playing Russian Roulette with three chambers loaded. Unless the Republican party grows a pair and starts going after this guy and his jihad cell of czars, 9/11 is going to look mild compared to what will happen the next time.
Or, maybe I'm just a pessimist for not thinking it'll all work out OK since we're all citizens with the best interest of our country at heart. You know, we disagree but we're all really good Americans.

I am a bit confused. I thought only Muslim MALES had to make the pilgrimage and that females were not allowed to do so.

No, women can make the haj. But they have to be accompanied by a husband or male relative.
Most school districts have the right to deny requests for leaves of absences, don’t they? She asked for 3 weeks, they said no.
The justice dept is seeking a court order requiring the school district to accommodate Islamic religious practices and beliefs.
If this is to done at least once in her life time.Why is she picking to do this in the middle of a school year ?Why is Obama/Holder trying to make this school board comply with this one woman’s interpretation of Islamic law.
Indeed. But again, if they have a stated policy of allowing these types of leaves or have done so in the past, then unless they can show there was a compelling reason for denying her request, then the suit has some standing.
I know that most school district's grant leave, but I would imagine they have a policy as to what constitutes a valid request.
