The second rifle looks like its a .338, I have a Ruger M77 Mk2 stainless in that caliber but with a Hogue rubber coated fiberglass stock. I have the Dishnetwork PVR and this show recorded and I am looking at the freeze frame when she has Becvkers gun, it has a super magnum recoil pad and looks like 9 cartridges on the right side of the stock, at the least they look like either .338 or even possibly the .375.

Taking an educated guess and also being a hunter here in Alaska I would say its a heavier caliber in case they come across a bear, a lighter cartridge like the 7mm would not be a good bear stopper unless its a very good shot, better to go as big as possible. So I bet its one of these two calibers, and I can say honest a .338 packs a pretty good wallop.

Humans with an empty freezer... animal standing around not immediately edible.... gets plugged.... a full freezer is the accomplishment.

Get a life.

Nobody is saying it took something extraordinary or heroic for Palin to shoot that Caribou - it is just that THIS time they filmed what is an ordinary event for people in Alaska.

This is how you get meat for the freezer.

Frankly, having eaten caribou, moose, seal and year-old whale pulled out of meat holes,...just give me a nice ground round burger and a coke!

No offense, I do like the woman but think she needs some serious range time. I had the impression it was her first time firing a rifle – someone else had to chamber rounds for her.
The show’s also a great commercial for Alaska.

Holy smokes, here in TX, we get one shot, and the deer makes like the wind. Are those critters that dumb?

Sarah probably has not hunted with her dad in a long time from what I hear, at least since she was so much in the political spotlight, she does know how to use a shotgun.

Just looking at her shoot she did all the right stuff from someone who knows what a rifle will do, especially about not getting knocked in the head by a scope.

When she shot Beckers rifle she had full control over it and it was obviously a serious caliber, much bigger than her dads 7mm, yet she did not flinch, held it with complete control.

I have seen bigger men react worse than her.

Bottom line is this, her dads gun had the scoped knocked out of line.

Clubbing the fish was very impressive. I found many women talking about it, as well as the ULU. They loved that ULU. Don’t you?

I think the star of this episode is the lady that runs the camp. She was attacked by a grizzly bear that drug by her head and then she retrieved her rifle and killed it. Later she stiched up her own head wounds! 10 days later a pilot found her. Anyone who can endure living up there year-round in -75 degree winters should have her own TV show.

And she could have ensured that her missing was edited out, but she didn't. It was cool that after, she proved to her dad the sights were off when even he could not hit a paper plate.

I actually prefer caribou. It has that “natural taste” that you don’t find with cattle.

Thats a good point, with Sarah Palin the show is real, unedited for the most part, shows human mistakes, human emotions.

I can just imagine Obama doing a hunting or fishing reality show.

Except his “background” is all a big blue screen and CGI.

Yes its amazing that she still has her sanity from being alone. I don’t work from November until april up here in Alaska and I would go nuts without my puter and satellite dish. Oh and my Bluray and widescreen...

I was surprised to see him using the gun as a walking stick - loaded or not, it’s a bad habit

Mr. coder2 said the same thing...

I live part time in Sweden. Wife and I went up north to Jakkmuck to look for reindeer.

We stopped at an intersection of two “way out” dirt roads and sat for a half hour or so. A reindeer (caribou) comes down the road - we could see it for half a mile.

It is trotting straight at us up the road. Finally gets up to the car and runs headlong into the grill and hood. It didn’t turn a bit from its path.

After it gets up, it looks into the driver window like “Hey, what just happened?” and walked away.

They may be the stupidest four legged animal alive.
