7.9 on the Richter scale; village destroyed.
An Earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale rocked the Aleutian Islands off of Alaska at 11:28 on Thursday morning according to the World Geologial Association. The earthquake was centered just off of the Rat Islands, a part of the Aleutian Archipeligo chain that extends into the Pacific Ocean off of the southern part of Alaska toward Asia.
The one village on the Island of Kiska, a mining settlement called Khvostov, was decimated; 219 of the approximately 750 residents were injured, although there were no fatalities reported.
The village of Khostov was built in World War II, as the entire Rat Island chain was a military base that provided access to Asia. The village was built with earthquakes in mind, and as such the structures are all built with safety measures to protect against the frequent quakes in the Aleutian chain.
Aftershocks were felt for nearly half an hour after the earthquake, which lasted nearly 90 seconds.
Coastal areas from mainland Alaska to California and across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and Japan are currently on alert for wave activit from the Alaskan Earthquake.
WOW 7.9 - guess O will be headed up there instead of Hawaii. Prayers for them.
Not showing up on the usgs site yet.
Godzilla fault????
Nor on any Alaskan TV stations that I can see. But this one website has a big writeup on it? Hmmm...
Anybody have a map handy?? How far from Shemya??
(I spent a year there, way, way, wayyy back when....)
Not on any real-time seismographs yet, either.
Bush’s fault, DUH!
Weird. Not a peep about this on any of the traditional news outlets, not even BNO has it yet.
90 seconds? wow. that must have seemed like an eternity to those in the area.
Is this recent...don’t see it on the map?
hehehehe, should be showing on the site, since its been about a half hour since the quake.
It must be Palin’s fault. Last 8 years everyting was Bush’s
fault. It’s time for the torch to be passed.
this is far west, way out in the Aleutian Islands
anybody have a good map?
Maybe it hasn’t actually happened yet?
Haven’t earthquakes off the Alaska coast been responsible for tsunamis that have hit Hawaii in the past?
Rat Islands? That’s just too much of a coincidence...
sounds fishy
not showing up on maps yet they already have the injury count
Humm, not seeing it on USGS yet.
