Gander Mountain (N.Y. state) -- pistol permit to purchase ammo???
self | 11/27/10 | NewJerseyJoe

Gander Mountain is having a Thanksgiving weekend special on Remington UMC 9mm Luger ammo. Went in this morning to purchase ... and the guy at the counter asked for my pistol permit. Huh? Never before have I been asked for a pistol permit in order to purchase ammo.

I live just over the state line in New Jersey, and getting a pistol permit here is generally about a 30-day effort. So I'll miss this sale.

Is this a new law in New York? I never encountered this situation before.

So say the 9mm is for a carbine.

I was trying to purchase ammo, not a gun. I checked N.Y. state law — outside of NYC, there are no laws (that I could find) requiring a pistol permit for ammo purchases.

The really weird thing is that I’ve purchased ammo in the past at this particular store location. I was never asked for any kind of ID or permit — until today.

You should have your head examined for being within a thousand miles of New York.

I’d recommend showing him the 2nd amendment.

You may have had a clerk that was new. Call the store and complain. Tell them you want a discount in order to pay you back for the gas to get back down there or a store credit on something else.

If that doesn’t work email corporate.

I had a local Home Depot that was just being ignorant over a policy. I wrote an email to Home Depot telling them they were screwing over their customers and how boneheaded that was in today’s economy.

I think the local store manager emailed me everyday for a week asking me to come in and talk to him so he could fix my issue. I couldn’t get him to give me the time of day before that.

For .22—they ask what KIND of weapon you use. (Better say a rifle!)

Believe it or not this is because kids 18-21 can BUY rifle ammo but not handgun ammo. So if you get asked what you're buying it for, are under 21 and tell them it's for a new .22 handgun you just got for your birthday, you're screwed - no sale.

I *think* that if you are 18-21 and you tell the store that you need 9mm for your carbine, that releases the store from liability for selling it to you. However, you may not find many that want to take the chance. Not sure what the applicable FEDERAL law is on that.

Way to denigrate 1/3 of the country -- not only a bunch of red states, but those of us in the trenches in the blue states, still fighting the fight that red-staters take for granted. Nice going.

Thank you for pointing that out! I didn’t know that free shipping was offered. So I just got my ammo from the website AND screwed New York state out of its 8% sales tax at the same time. Thanks for the tip!!

> You may have had a clerk that was new.

I don't think so... when I said that I'd never had to show a pistol permit before, he said, "Not when *I* was here." Very self-assured -- smug, rather.

> If that doesn’t work email corporate.

Did that. We shall see what kind of response I get. If I do get a response, I'll post it here.

In the meantime, one of the respondents on this thread pointed out that the same item on the company's website was being offered with free shipping. So I ordered it that way! and avoided the sales tax to boot.

Joe,

Every time I’ve purchased ammo in NY at any big box store, they’ve asked me for my Firearms Purchaser ID. They say “pistol permit” since that’s what NY residents need and I give them my FPID.

If you go to Davis in Goshen they won’t but of course they aren’t having a sale.

Also...

if you apply At checkout coupon code g7746 for $20 off $100, the price is even tastier. That was yesterday...unclear if the offer still applies today.

I showed them my NJ firearms ID — which apparently does not fulfill their requirement.

As I wrote in another reply on this thread, I’ve purchased ammo at Gander Mountain in Middletown before, but have never had to show any kind of permit/ID to buy that ammo.

I've purchased at the same store and been asked for my NJ FPID. I've also had to show my FPID at the Walmart just down the street from there.

Howdy from Texas, keep fighting the good fight, Joe.

Also, you may want to try CheaperThanDirt.com. They have very good prices, even when figuring shipping.

It would be interesting to know what they have to allow about your experience. Maybe it will come as as big a surprise to them as it did to you, with a clerk acting independently for some reason.

Did you hear about the sale in an ad, and if so I don’t guess it mentioned this puzzling requirement.

If you get a response to your inquiry and have the time I would like to hear what it is.
