When I went to the airport today, I was put in the uncomfortable position of a so-called “naked” full-body scan. Today’s experience was very different from the last flight I made, nearly two weeks ago; at that time I only had to go through a magnetometer. Today there was no option — it was either the full-body scan, a humiliating pat-down or no flight. All passengers flying out of Washington, DC were subjected to the new procedures. So, like confused cattle, our uneasy line of air travelers was herded through the machine.
But my experience today was nothing compared to that of Thomas D. “Tom” Sawyer, a 61-year-old retired special education teacher from Lansing, Michigan. Sawyer was reportedly on his way to a wedding in Orlando when his medical condition caught the special attention of security.
As a survivor of bladder cancer, Sawyer wears his pants two sizes to large to accommodate medical equipment he must now wear. “I have to wear special clothes and in order to mount the [urostomy] bag I have to seal a wafer to my stomach and then attach the bag. If the seal is broken, urine can leak all over my body and clothes,” he recounted to MSNBC.
On Nov. 7, Sawyer said he went through the security checkpoint at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. “Evidently the scanner picked up on my urostomy bag, because I was chosen for a pat-down procedure,” he said. Because of his medical condition, Sawyer says he asked to be screened in private. “One officer looked at another, rolled his eyes and said that they really didn’t have any place to take me,” said Sawyer. “After I said again that I’d like privacy, they took me to an office.”

What kind of scanning system does Israel use?
I’m pretty sure that started out as part of a satire piece, then some idiot picked it up from there and ran it in a serious news article.
Problem is that the TSA is randomly doing intensive pat-downs on people who actually go through the full body scans. So, even if you go through it and are clear, you can STILL be subject to the “Enhanced Patdown”.
I am sorry. Do you see that once they get you to accept the concept that everyone is guilty until proved innocent by the government, they got you. To be honest, I would rather take my chances on a plane because this cure is as bad as the disease.
Do you see how they will then say in the interests of security for all, we need to do searches on everyone’s homes to make sure that the terrorists are weeded out. It is all for the safety you will feel once we have checked everyone’s home.
Get yourself a pocket Constitution. It was crafted for this very reason.
I don't know if you are serious or not, but...I am a senior citizen. I use a walker with wheels. I called the airlines before my flight (in early October out of the Pittsburgh airport)and told them this, and that I have metal rods in my back from surgery, and a metal knee replacement. Just to be sure I had no problems at the screening.
I was pulled out of line and taken to a side room for a pat-down before this became a law.
There were three dirty, noisy, unkempt looking men in line who were all together. They were not selected but I was. Why????
The woman was very respectful, but it was still humiliating. I was nervous about the fact that those men had been overlooked and walked right on the plane. I wondered, why in the world did they pick me...and, further, ignore them? So your size, race, etc. makes no difference. I worried the whole flight about them, but no passengers had to worry about me - I had been embarassed and viewed and I am sure that made everyone feel safe...LOL!
The underwear bomber, who is presumably the impetus for the pat downs, boarded the flight in Amsterdam not the US and the CIA was warned about him twice by his father prior to the flight; his US visa was never revoked.
How will pat downs in the US prevent it from happening again?
If I can’t drive there, I won’t go...
Family on the other side of the country... Travel requirements for work... The list goes on and on.
Due to my medical problems, I've been temporarily excused from traveling to our "hot site" for maintenance on the servers and network devices there (these are day trips from KC to Dallas, usually with practically no notice, so driving the 9 hours each way just isn't an option), and I've got family who's about 22 hours away by car. It's been a year now since I've seen them, and it may be at least another year until I get to see them again.

This is a hot topic in our house as Mr G needs to fly to do a job in January. This is usually a very slow time of year for us, so this job is important. His choice is to fly, and have his dignity and rights assaulted, or drive and lose 2 further weeks of work, and negate the income he earns for the single job.
If we could go with him we would take our son out of school and make a road trip of it. Unfortunately, we can’t afford that.

Profile passengers for terrorism. Read up on how El AL, the Israeli airline, performs security to prevent attacks on the most desirable of airline targets for muslim terrorists.
