What Is The Best U.S. State To Move To Insulate Yourself From The Coming Economic Meltdown?

snip

As the economy continues to crumble and as millions of Americans find it nearly impossible to find a good job, many of them have been wondering if things are any better in other parts of the country. And without a doubt, some areas of the U.S. are complete and total disaster zones at this point. For example, so many houses have been abandoned in Detroit that the mayor has proposed bulldozing one-fourth of the city. In Las Vegas, it was estimated that approximately 65 percent of all homes with a mortgage were "underwater" at the height of the housing crash. The number of people unemployed in the state of California is approximately equal to the populations of Nevada, New Hampshire and Vermont combined.

And I have spent 2+ years in the DFW metroplex so I know the difference between “y’all” and “all y’all” AND just before I was rolling off my last project there I found myself (seriously) using the term “I’m fixin’ to...”

Oddly, the term "...fixing to..." was one I heard frequently when growing up in Western Pennsylvania in the 40's and 50's. There are distinct speech patterns in that part of the country, doubtlessly influenced by Scots-Irish settlers.

How are home gardens outlawed? I am not in favor of the legislation, but I am wondering how one might get home gardening out of this definition:

“(19) PROCESS- The term ‘process’ or ‘processing’ means the commercial slaughter, packing, preparation, or manufacture of food.”

Thanks for ping. I have decided, if the offer still stands, to move in the spring to the place I mentioned before. It’s far enough off the beaten path yet is a lttle community where people look out for one another. Additionally my landlords new garage is close by if I have auto troubles...or get snowed in. This would take me outside this small city into the urban area and then some. An added plus is there is a garden there already for planting. Meanwhile have started to stock up little by little.

” but I am wondering how one might get home gardening out of this definition “

From discussions I’ve seen on the subject, the word ‘commercial’ would also apply to roadside veggie stands, and, in the hands of overzealous regulators (is there any other kind??), the wording can also be construed such that sharing your harvest with neighbors - without money changing hands - could also fall under this, and bring your home-use garden under regulatory scrutiny...

The phrase ‘can-of-worms’ comes to mind.....

Hello sneakers...I’m several miles North of Pittsburgh. Hate the city but enjoy the rural communities surrounding. I never go to the city....far too Democratic for me!

The post to which I replied said home gardening would be outlawed in January 2011. I disagree with that post. No doubt the legislation is trying to capture and register all food producers in commerce. That is a different issue.

Mississippi? We are across the river. :)

I currently live in Northern MS, and so far really love the area.

” I tried to warn everybody beginning in 2006. But nobody would listen.”

We both tried to warn people about several things in 2006. I hope a few listened, especially about the coming banking & real estate meltdown.

Four years ago, most of us were still naive enough to think that ‘our’ remaining Republican Congresscritters were actually still on ‘our’ side, and would rein in these Liberal excesses before they got this far....

Oops.....

I believe both political parties are window dressing. Politicians are like actors on the stage or movies. They spout policies like lines dictated by the powerful rulers behind the scenes. Who are these dictators who rule everything _____ ?

Wealthy banksters and Wall Street crooks like George Soros. Take your pick of the crooks. Throw in some well know puppet masters like Zbigniew Brzezinsk, Henry Alfred Kissinger, David Rockefeller, Sr and the wealthy elitist Bohemian Grove bunch and the CFR. They are all the same.

An indoor hydroponic garden can produce a huge amount of food as long as you have energy for the lights. It would have the advantage of being hidden away from prying eyes.

I must confess that MS did come to mind. I suspect you’re in a very enviable position if SHTF.

I live east of Pittsburgh - in Indiana County. What’s nice about Pittsburgh, is that you don’t have to go far out of the city to find farms and small communities.

This is true...many are quite close in fact. I sometimes wish I could appreciate the city more than I do. But one very bad car trip driving in that city was eough for me. Providence RI is a cake walk by comparrison, and it’s known for it’s insane drivers and difficulty navigating thru. Pittsburgh is beyond insane for driving!
