Network news and the internet were abuzz with the report and video by Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCBS of a reported missile launch late Monday afternoon -- around 5 PM. Both the Air Force and the Navy denied they had any missiles launches at the time. According to CBS News the Defense Department remains baffled.
"Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. "So far, we've come up empty with any explanation."
And they go on:
"The FAA told CBS News that they ran radar replays of a large area west of Los Angeles based on media reports of the location of a possible missile launch, but they did not reveal any fast moving unidentified targets in that area. The FAA also did not receive any reports of any unusual sightings from pilots in the area."
"The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no further details."
A search for flights that could have left a contrail led me to US Airs flight 808 from Honolulu to Phoenix. The flight took off from Honolulu at 10:06 AM HST, passed over Catalina Island at 5:03 PM PST....

Lorrie LaibleI find it intersting that no one claims to know about this. Yesterday we were returning from Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines with an arrival time of 3:25 pm at LAX. Approximately 270 miles away our pilot came on the speaker and told us we would be rerouted over Big Sur California due to military maneuvers in our path. Maybe they should speak with the pilot of our flight.

It was a white man in a white van.
“Perhaps Hu will give him a knowing look as he explains the importance of not devaluing the dollar.”
The heck of it is, they will assume they have the upper hand over this even if it was our own missile. I suspect Obama wants to maximize embarrassment for our military.
On the other hand ... China has attended many of our naval exercizes. They know our weaknesses. [Thanks, Clinton!]
Don’t forget: on the grassy knoll.
“That only makes sense if BO told them not to explain themselves. Otherwise, they would gladly have cleared this up and not look like theyre embarrassed.”
“Don’t let a good crisis go to waste.”
I would say this is another “Navy cannot operate in this area” scene to be played out by our two esteemed Democrat Senators in California. Sort of like what happened with the Sonar in Frisco bay and how it was affecting the whales.
“... the Sonar in Frisco bay and how it was affecting the whales.”
EQ, were you the guy who posted that earlier? I could imagine this goofy administration cutting off active sonar. And China would know about it because they attended many of our naval exerciizes.
Are you saying the ChiComs don’t respect the whale? That’s wasiss!!!

I posted that. I remember the stink in California because of it. I would think that the lefties out west would use this as another reason why the navy shouldn’t be operating so close to shore.
What was that lame excuse they came up with when a missle brought down TWA Flight 800 back in ‘96?
An exploding fuel tank?
The government knuckleheads need to start telling the truth about something.
Well, the Klingon’s did celebrate the day that Obama, our weakest leader in history, was elected...
With a corkscrew contrail near the ground.
Missile
FWIW
According to Business Insider, ‘top aviation journalist’ Jon Ostrower said via twitter that he was 100% convinced it was a jet.
From website Instapundit.com:
“Reader Larry Rachman writes: Sounds like those aliens from that faked oil rig explosion are finally heading home. Godspeed.”
Also from website Instapundit.com, a letter
from Cliff Beach who says he was in the army - missile defense for 22 years, says the following ( summary quotes):
“So if this was a missile, the DoD knows it was within a few seconds.”
and
“Adding to the belief that it is unlikely DoD is withholding info is the fact that DoD has no pubic relations staff sitting around ready to confirm that a passenger jet was flying in the sky near our west coast. They probably have not the foggiest idea how to absolutely confirm that jet A caused contrail B seen by public C and ensure it is believed by conspiracy theorists D, E, and F. “
Conservatives might have an opportunity here too:

Yeah, I suppose passenger jets fly in corkscrew flight patterns to save on fuel. /sarc.
That’s reassuring to think that the DoD has no idea when an aircraft comes with 35 miles of one of our biggest cities. Not to mention numerous military bases in the area.
Passenger jets come straight up out of the ocean in a corkscrew pattern ALL THE TIME. What’s wrong with you guys?
