Network news and the internet were abuzz with the report and video by Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCBS of a reported missile launch late Monday afternoon -- around 5 PM. Both the Air Force and the Navy denied they had any missiles launches at the time. According to CBS News the Defense Department remains baffled.
"Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. "So far, we've come up empty with any explanation."
And they go on:
"The FAA told CBS News that they ran radar replays of a large area west of Los Angeles based on media reports of the location of a possible missile launch, but they did not reveal any fast moving unidentified targets in that area. The FAA also did not receive any reports of any unusual sightings from pilots in the area."
"The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no further details."
A search for flights that could have left a contrail led me to US Airs flight 808 from Honolulu to Phoenix. The flight took off from Honolulu at 10:06 AM HST, passed over Catalina Island at 5:03 PM PST....

I have flown in to LA from Honolulu many times. We passed over Catalina a lot. But we were heading East. That missile was heading West by North.
You’re right.
and straight up
Pure propaganda. No way that was an airplane.
Frankly, I find the scramble in the MSM to spin this as a combination airliner and optical illusion, and the willingness of people to believe it in defiance of all common sense, as disturbing as the launch itself.
If you see a turtle on a fence post you should assume someone put it there. If you see a sham cover up from an IslandTurtle it seems to me that the same assumption should be made. The next thought is why?
Well looked to me like it was on a sub orbital track to the NW assuming the camera was over LA. It was going away. I have seen a lot of launches from the cape. It sure looks like a solid fuel booster and appears to begin staging at the end of the clip. I have not seen a contrail going at that speed. Airliners only fly at 550knts.

If it was the Koreans or Chinese Obama would need to cover it up.
Never believe anything in the MSM. They are prodigy of the communists.

” The next thought is why?”
I would say 1 of 3 things. Either a Civil defense drill to test public perception of a crisis, a propulsion test or something happened to the missile and they removed the warhead and shot the missile off for safety reasons.
What we do know is it came from the ocean so the assumption would have to be it was launched from a sub.
Quoting your take here since you sure as heck know missiles [and bless you for serving our nation!]
OldMissileer: “That is a sub launched ballistic missile and it looks as if its’ trajectory was taking it toward Kwajalein Atoll where we target our western test launches.”

“That missile was heading West by North.”
That was the impression that I got.
I also noted a small dot at the front end of the trail, as the source.
Has anyone magnified it?
I also noted the pulsing look of the trail.
“Either a Civil defense drill to test public perception of a crisis”
No need for orchestrated tests. They have plenty of real life experience to draw upon and don’t want to be blamed for potentially dampening the stock market.
“... a propulsion test or something happened to the missile and they removed the warhead and shot the missile off for safety reasons.”
That only makes sense if BO told them not to explain themselves. Otherwise, they would gladly have cleared this up and not look like they’re embarrassed.
Because the US was caught with their britches down?
Maybe the ChiComs wanted to see if we really do have a missile defense system. 0blahblah is scheduled to meet with them on his grand tour too. Perhaps Hu will give him a knowing look as he explains the importance of not devaluing the dollar.
This is hogwash. At the time USA808 would have been "over" Catalina Island at 5:03 PM PST. The Military MOA W289 and W289N were both active, these two MOA's literally cut Catalina Island in half.
All commercial traffic inbound and out bound to SOCAL Area are routed well north of these two MOA's.
