Once upon a time there was a little tribal boy named Temujin.

He and his family were persecuted by other tribes called the Tatars, and another tribe called the Naiman Khanlig, because Temujin and his family were few, and did not work together, and made the mistake of treating the Tatars and Naimans with trust and courtesy. During a truce, the Tatars murdered little Temujin’s father, and Temujin and his family had to flee into the wilderness where they almost starved to death.

But they did not die, and young Temujin grew strong, grew older, and gathered friends and relatives together wherever he could find them. They were called ‘Mongols’. The Mongols worked and trained together very hard, because they were tired of being threatened, raided and robbed.

Temujin grew up to be a very tall, gray eyed man who did not trust and did not compromise, and he also became a general. Temujin and the Mongols defeated the Tatars and the Naimans. Every single Tatar and Naiman male was set against a wagon wheel. If he was taller than the wagon wheel he was killed right there. All of the Tatar and Naiman women and children were shared out among the now very large Mongol nation, and the Tatars and Naimans ceased to exist that day.

This happened long ago, and now we know Temujin as Genghis Khan. Before he died, he destroyed or conquered other nations and peoples, such as the Xia, the Jin Dynasty, the Kara-Khitai, Russia, Georgia and the Khwarezmian Empire. In all of those wars, the Mongols were heavily outnumbered by their enemies.

This little tale has four morals:

1) Quality beats quantity.

2) History is not linear.

3) Populations grow slowly, but can shrink very suddenly.

4) Don’t start something you can’t finish.
