It's Time To Buy A Gun
Grand Rants ^ | 10-25-10 | Gerry Ashley

Posted on 10/25/2010 8:56:26 AM PDT by Stoutcat

I’ve never wanted to own a gun. In fact, in my former days as a liberal, I was one of those singing the mantra of gun control. Even as I morphed into a conservative adult, I still felt that there was no need for me to own a gun, but believed that was the right of all law-abiding citizens to keep and/or bear arms, should they choose to do so.

Saturday night, however, that all changed for me.

My dog and I became the targets for a drive-by shooting...

...Even though it was most likely a random act of stupidity by kids, it’s put me in the position where I can no longer put off the decision as to whether or not to own a gun.

And I really resent that...

It makes a lot of sense to have at least a few unregistered guns on hand. In most states, you can still buy a gun face to face in a private party transaction and there will be no record of it and it is perfectly legal. Here in CA, all sales have to go thru a dealer and all handguns are registered. I have a few guns that were bought in the 80’s or before which are not registered or on anybody’s radar and this is perfectly legal.

IMHO, a “deeply fallible and sometimes downright evil” view of human nature is usually the fundamental dividing line between liberals and conservatives. In general, conservatives aren’t surprised by the existence of shooters—although they may be surprised it happened to them.

They deny the existence of God, and as a result, they deny the existence of the sinful nature of man.

What’s the story on Hi-Point guns? I’ve read that they are kind of cheap and crappy. Agree? Disagree? How’s their accuracy?

In the last few weeks I, I mean a friend of mine, has bought a Para Ordinance .45 and a Ruger 10/22. That completes my, I mean his “essential” gun collection. He now has a gun for every occasion, from the lone person trying to car jack him to the golden hoard trying to steal his supplies. The only problem is, if I, meaing him, of course, got in a bad situation, he would probably get shot trying to figure out which gun to use. He needs a gun caddy to help me decide.

Their warrenty sounds like Sears Craftman tools if it breaks youd send in back(I think at their expense) and they fix it and send it back to you. It seems to me if they were true pos’s that they would be backrupt after awhile.

Well the a$$hole should practice what he preached. No gun for you buddy, just big fat wet kisses from upchuckie Schumer and Diane Feinswine - if their armed bodyguards let you get that close.

>Nobody around here owns guns. They were all lost on a fishing trip if I remember correctly.

Ironically I lost all my boats in a tragic gunning accident...

Sounds like some kids shot a pellet gun at him, so now he wants to be Rambo.

Maybe guns in the hands of libs isn’t such a good idea...

Stop shooting holes in the boats! I actually knew of a case where that happened. There were a bunch of guys in a multi-company fishing tournament in TX. Well, this one crew must have parked under some overhanging trees and ended up with a snake in a wet well used to keep your catch. When they saw it, somebody overreacted and shot the thing with a shotgun at close range. Killed the snake. Didn't do the boat much good.

They certainly LOOK crappy. I've never owned or shot one, so I can't really say. Their 45 ACP pistol doesn't look like it would fit my hand very well.

Agreed. I’ve heard it said that the difference between an anti-gun and pro-gun advocate is that the anti-gun advocate knows deep down inside that if they were to get deeply angered, they would go on a shooting spree. As a result of that knowledge, and of their self-projection, they think everybody is like that.

Hi-Points have an odd advantage of being so heavy they do a good job of sucking up the felt recoil....but that might be about it.

“They deny the existence of God, and as a result, they deny the existence of the sinful nature of man.”

I agree. However, one does not have to be a Christian to agree with the conclusions about human nature that follow from the doctrine of original sin. All one has to do is read history books and observe society. Original Sin, considered as a scientific hypothesis, has more evidence supporting it than any other hypothesis I can think of.

Similarly, many Christians just can’t get to a gut feel for what the doctrine means. E.G., lot’s of Christians believe you can get to heaven on your own bootstraps of goodness and good effort and good living. Many do not hold a view of human nature consistent with the unambiguous teaching of scripture.

I don’t know whether the author is Christian or not. But he is still on the road to being a conservative. I’m a little surprised the shooting was not his road to Damascus. He’s still fighting the evidence of his eyes and ears.

Tow observatins about the author:

1. “I whipped out my phone and dialed 911 and, within minutes there were two sheriff’s cars on the scene and another half-dozen or so combing the area north of Safety Harbor, but by then the punks could have been just about anywhere.” Yup. And you don’t want to live in an area that has a cop on every street corner. Not a nice atmosphere.

2. “I’d rather shove the gun up the shooter’s behind and pull the trigger.” Thankfully, the deputy knew I was kidding. Never, ever, make a statement to the police, except with a deep tone of concern in your voice, and never make jokes. Your tone of voice will not be recorded in the officer’s notebook. If one of those folk involved in the drive-by ends up at room temperature, the author’s name will be remembered.
