Anyone seeking low-wage employment as a fry cook or burger flipper at fast food restaurants in Calif. will soon have to pass a state-administered licensing exam to assure they are skilled in their 'trades.'
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-San Fernando Valley) was the mastermind behind the Food Safety law that stands to bankroll the fiscally irresponsible state with $105 million in "food handler" licensing and training fees in 2011 alone.
"Food handlers" charged with "preparation, storage or service of food" will be required as of June 1, 2011 by S.B. 602 to possess the licenses that will cost "no more than $60." The training course prior to licensing will tack-on another $15.
According to the California Restaurant Association which supported the licensing law, "California is home to more than 1.4 million food industry jobs." If each of those 1.4 million food workers pay a total of $75 for their required training and licensing, the state will pull-in an easy $105 million in 2011 alone. License renewals should ensure a steady flow of free money for years to come.
Does this sound like a big government revenue-generating scheme or an authentic effort by bureaucrats to ensure French fries, hamburgers, filet mignons, deli sandwiches, donuts, ice cream cones, coffee, etc. are properly prepared?
Here's an even better question, how do you think the state will go about licensing illegal aliens who work 'in the shadows' for food service employers? Surely, they won't be applying for the licenses, but will still be preparing food in kitchens at countless restaurants across the state. Try asking Sen. Padilla how that's going to work since he's so concerned about ensuring "food safety."
Certified food worker - works for me.
And they would then qualify for citizenship.
And the “training” will have to be in a state approved “facility or school” and blah blah blah.
California only looks dead, the hand that shot its foot now raises the gun to its head.
My daughter cooks in Summer Camps, must have a tine test for TB, most food handlers do.
They should require you to prove citizenship or legal residency in order to get licensed then waive the fee if you are and refuse employment if you aren’t.
And of course you will get to register to vote at the same time you pay for your burger flipping license.
So glad I don’t live in California. Their government??? What a bunch a f*cking idiots!
I think only those food-preparers who clear more than $200,000 per year ought to have to pay the licensing fee.
I see automation in McDonald’s future. They really don’t need any cooks once it is cheaper t automate, just someone to take folks’ money, and they can automate that, too- McDonald’s to become a drive-through vending machine.
Are we sure this isn’t from the Onion? I cannot believe they’d really waste everyone’s time with something this stupid.
When the burgeries automate it will spread from California regardless of whether the other states follow California’s lead.
“License renewals should ensure a steady flow of free money for years to come. “
And I bet they said this with a straight face.
What a bunch of putzes!
Taxes disguised as ‘fees’ and at the same time put there ‘to ensure safety of the public’. Gee, thanks, CA. We just can’t live safely without you.
It’s the same in my ex-province in canada. You cant be a bartender and even God forbid, a dishwasher nor waiter unless you pass this idiotic foodsafe test. It’s the same literature for the past 10 years and everyone knows the answers.
I work in a CVS Drug Store, in the slot area. I don’t dispense food, sell food or come in contact with food. I run the slot machine area. We are required to have a food handlers license, be tested for T=B. All in the name of the state getting more tax money. It doesn’t have a thing to do with food or food handling.I could take an ape to the classes, let him sit through the class, and he would get a food handlers license.
Take a look at who the fast food cooks are. The libs are taking money out of the pockets of their core demographic.
Minorities, women, the poor, and children (by Obamacare definition, up to age 26) will be most affected.
Not sure, but my brother is a scoutmaster and when they set up their hot-dog stand at the county fair, everybody needs a health card. It’s not a big deal, it just proves you’ve passed a class that discusses food handling and storage, and hygiene.
Mark
I used to work at a Sizzler in WA state and we had to take a test on food safety too. I don’t remember whther it cost me anything, but I did learn things that I didn’t know like the “danger zone” temps, how hot dishwashing water has to be, wiping tables with bleached water, etc. I DID know about washing hands, though. We had a dishwasher who didn’t wash his hands after pooping, and a customer complained (as would I).
