What is the best hunting knife?

You didn’t say what you’re hunting (dressing), but a four inch drop-point fixed blade will get you from deer to moose. I’ve used 3” Buck folders on deer with no problem. I prefer drop-point blade tips over clip-point knives because I believe they help avoid piercing organs while field dressing game. For dressing pheasant etc, I prefer a good pair of shears (heavy scissors) to a knife.

I bought an Imperial sheath knife maybe 50 years ago for a dollar. It was made pretty cheaply, had a stamped steel guard and plastic handles. I thought it was unusual that the steel seemed really good. It held an edge well and was easy to sharpen.

I remember reading in a Cold Steel brochure several years ago, that plain old high speed tool steel makes an excellent knife. Of course they said their own steel was the best.

I think any good quality knife would do but the best knife I ever had was a Puma “White Hunter” which I bought in 1965. It had that rare property of holding an edge really well yet being easy to sharpen.

I also like many of the Cold Steel knives.

Hands-down - the Cold Steel Bushman. It’s not a folder, but it is an incredible piece of work.

Schrade Sharp Finger is the best all around outdoors knife I’ve used when weight and size matter.

These are some of Mr. Tabor's primitive folders. I've held one and it fits your hand like a glove. Mr. Tabor hand pours those blades with his own steel recipie to get that look, and those blades will shave your face. He's an incredible talent.
